RICOH GR IIIx ????? PURPLE?????????????????? | RICOH IMAGING
Japanese merchants are very active on eBay, so a few may show up here also.

My Q-7 needs an occasional hard reboot, so I ordered a low shutter-count Q-S1 from there.

I watched the GR Night event this evening, where the camera was described in detail and three professional photographers talked through some of their work with the cameras.

The samples look very good for a surprising range of photography. I'm not going to summarize what they said, because I'm sure it will come out in other articles soon, and I don't have the time for it today.

One thing that was explained was the teleconverter. The reason why it is described in that odd way as 75mm equivalent in crop mode is that to keep the lens compact, it does not cover the full frame. When attached, the camera goes into the crop mode. So you get a 15mp image at the 75mm equivalent FOV. One of the photographers showed some portraits with it and they looked very nice. It is quite odd to see such a small camera produce such short tele images with nice bokeh. When I think that my K-5 IIs is 16mp, the crop doesn't seem such an issue.

In fact, the lens looks very good in all the usual ways (sharpness, borek, flare), just like the 28mm equivalent one in the GR III.

By the way, the X stands for "Extended", meaning both that the focal length is longer, and that the camera extends the definition of what GR cameras are.

After using the GR II I'm always wondering why it's so sharp compared to the DSLR primes. Perhaps different design objectives, perhaps flange distance and fixed lens design. I still wish they could get that kind of performance in a smallish DSLR prime.
Yes, I guess you're right. On a fixed lens camera , there is no mandatory lens / sensor distance to be respected, and if so , the sensor + lens assembly can be optimized for best "performance" I suppose. And you'd have to compare with a 40mm on full frame, which I guess is easier to design than a 26mm on FF.

None of the reviews or press releases has explained the 30mm field of view claim:

“ Depending on the way the lens is used, this versatile angle of view can create different image renditions: you can capture an image similar to those taken at a 30mm semi-wide angle, or create a completely different visual expression as if taken at a 50mm standard angle. ”

I understand the two crop options and the teleconverter, but how do you get the 30mm equivalent view? It is this just marketing speak to say it’s between 30-50mm?

Its how they have described the 43ltd and the 31ltd as well I think. That theycan become the common fl's at either side by taking a step back or forth.

Well that came out of nowhere - caught DPR sleeping, too - very welcome though, I'm getting increasingly fond of the 43mm on the K-1 for around town

When I got the 43 I was worried it would have too much character to be a workhorse (like, say, the DFA 28-105, which is really really good for everything but doesn't quite "stand out" if you know what I mean).

Boy was I wrong. It's more or less glued to my K-1 now, sharing with the 77 and the M20 (and, hopefully, the DFA 21 whenever that happens and I can afford it).

The GR3x would be perfect for me as a street camera, it's just too much money at the moment unfortunately.

Hope it'll be released in the US along with other regions. I still don't see any US-based sources or the Ricoh USA website mentioning it.

Such a nice camera! I instantly started to love it.

It's certainly a little sad, that the wide lens doesn't fit on the new IIIx and the tele lens also doesn't fit on the III. But anyway: Think about combining a GR IIIx with a good 1"-sensored wideangle raw-capable smartphone: You'd have everything you need for city and street...

The adapters work within very tight constraints with the image circle of the GR lenses, there's not any real estate for cross-compatibility.

It should not be a real problem to use the 0.75 conversion lens (that is already designed for a wide lens) on a 40 mm but you are right concerning the use of the TC lens (that in fact does not even cover the circle of the original 40 mm afaik) on the original GR III.

Anyways: it would not have been impossible. It's just not wanted. Else the IIIx would be cannibalizing the original III.

Not really? Neither sizewise, nor in the focal length (that equals 60 mm in case of K-01 w. 40 mm XS and 40 mm in case of the GR IIIx)?!
