The names are conjecture? Apparently so, thanks for editing out the D FA part.

I could not find the parts about the zoom ranges or image circles (Google translate).

125-600mm F5-5.6 SR

That would be a big lens.

That 150-600 would be nice if it is similar in size/weight of the current 150-450

600 f/10 = 60mm front diameter.

Like the Sigma 150-600 C or Tamron 150-600 SP?

A good quality, affordable 70-300 SR for me, please.

Yep... And that is the minimum. The 150-450 has an 86 mm filter thread (when the minimum standard size would be 82). I would think a lens that makes it to 600/5.6 would be Star glass and who knows what size it will be...

It'll be light weight, inexpensive, super sharp, without CA, perfectly creamy bokeh, and 8 stops SR. Are you happy? If it's better than the D-FA 70-210, you won't be disappointed.

I remember other patents on a similar subject (which I believe is a 70-300 SR, currently a line on the roadmap) being published last year.
I see no reason to suspect a longer lens.

Certainly a big 125mm lens...

Isn’t having several lines in the patent normal for a single lens?

So these four patented configurations are only likely to result in one or maybe two lenses.

Obviously the 70-300 would fit with the existing roadmap, but that 125-600 would be pretty cool if I could carry it

Steve
  • Example 1: 72.08-291.32mm f/4.6-5.7
  • Example 2: 72.08-291.36 f/4.6-5.8
  • Example 3: 72.08-291.36 f/4.6-5.8
  • Example 4: 68.47-291.36 f/4.6-5.9
  • Example 5: 103.00-388.00 f/4.5-5.8
  • Example 6: 102.81-388.73 f/4.6-5.8
  • Example 7: 72.11-388.00 f/4.1-5.8
  • Example 8: 154.50-582.00 f/5.1-6.4
  • Example 9: 154.50-582.00 f/5.0-6.4
  • Example 10: 154.50-582.00 f/5.1-6.5
  • Example 11: 123.50-592.46 f/4.9-6.5

All of them have an image circle's radius of 21.64mm, all of them include SR.

In short and using 'commercial' focal lengths and apertures:
  • 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6: four examples
  • 70-400mm f/4-5.6: one example
  • 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6: two examples
  • 120-600mm f/5-6.3: one example
  • 150-600mm f/5-6.3: three examples

Theses lenses suffer from heavy focus breathing: at short distance the 70-300s become 70-160s, the 70-400mm becomes a 65-145mm, the 100-400s become 90-175s, the 120-600mm becomes a 120-180mm and the 150-600s become 100-175s.

Indeed, two similar patent requests were published last year:
  1. 2020-086357 on 4 June 2020 (seven examples of a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SR)
  2. 2020-154288 on 24 September 2020 (seven examples of a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SR, one example of a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SR and three examples of a 70-200mm f/2.8 SR)

All three patent requests, including the one which has motivated this thread, have the same person credited as inventor: Tomoya Koga, also credited as co-inventor in the patent request corresponding to the optical formula of the HD Pentax-DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW.

A bit off topic but I've forgotten. Have we seen a patent for the DFA21 yet? Seems only some lenses get these early patent applications or am I wrong?

I guess the lack of telephotos has become apparent to them.
All with SR, meaning, there must be a camera coming with combination IBIS and SR integration? Maybe? Or more likely you just turn SR off like I did with my Sigma 120-400.
