A hypothetical 300mm/2.8 with a ring type SDM, image stabilizer working in tandem with ibis and dedicated teleconverter sounds way more appealing than the DA 560, at least for me. It also shouldn't be much more expensive than DA 560, judging by what the competition offers.
The competition cost $6000 and sell in larger numbers than Pentax would manage.....

In my country, DA 560 costs equivalent of 5700 USD. I consider 6000$ USD for much more versatile lens a fair trade.

I was citing US prices at B+H. They want $3997 for the DA 560....

I agree that a 300/2.8 lens with converter is very compelling outfit. However, I believe that very fast super telephotos have lost some of their relevance due to ever increasing high ISO performance. How many would pay $5000 more for one stop gain over a 300/4 lens that is much smaller lighter as well?
I suspect lenses like the 150-450 and the patented 150-600 and similar lenses are the future for most long telephotos. Such lenses are the best we can realistically hope for from Pentax, unless they start doing things like Canon sponsoring lots of telephoto lenses at large sport events......

Well, I guess prices vary around the globe. Canon 300mm 2.8 and its Nikon counterpart in my country costs around 6 grand, like in the US.

In any case, if one day Pentax announces DFA* 300mm 2.8 SR for 6000 USD, I'm game.

I have my Tamron 300 2.8 with 1.4, 1.5 and 2x TCs for it. I don't use it much. Especially since my blind platform needs repair. You have to be some place you can set up and wait. For the most part I don't like those places unless I'm feeling social.

I'll do that once or twice year.

The presence of a few brand-new DA560 lenses on the market even now is why Pentax won’t come out with another really ‘long’ but ‘fast’ lens soon -
they simply don’t sell very well.
I'm afraid your right.

I would really love to see an affordable 150-600 F5-6.3 for round about 1000-1600 Euro (in that price range are the Sigma and Tamron 150-600s, the Nikon 200-500 and the Sony 200-600, at least here in europe). Such a lens combined with the rugged Pentax weather sealing, in-lens-IS and a fast AF-motor would be a great fit for the K3 Mark III or a possible K1 Mark III with an updated AF-system, at least in my oppinion.
Maybe that lens could even win over a handfull of wildlife photographers from Canon and Nikon who still would prefer using a DSLR over mirrorless but most likely will not get a new iteration of their D500s and 7Ds anymore..

I'm afraid that a Pentax 150-600/5-6.3 would cost $3000 ++

At that speed I'd say anywhere between 2000 and ~2700 (higher than the DFA 150-450, but not outrageously so).

I also don't see Pentax making such lens for practical reasons - how many people would spring extra for the 450-600mm range when the existing option is flat-out fantastic, and even a Tamron rebadge would go for ~1700 at least?

I'd rather see them make a relatively lightweight 400/4.5 or so, even if that would be even more expensive.

There's a Pentax 210 to 630 ƒ/8 ( the 150-450 with the 1.4)

If people won't pay the price for that, they probably won't pay the price for a Pentax 150-600.
Way to many threads are devoted to the lost cause of cheap telephotos over 300mm.

It's all about what Pentax should cater too. Right now they are on the premium quality trajectory. In few years they may try a new direction, who knows, but it's unlikely.

If the Pentax DSLR market starts expanding, we can reasonably expect some "market share of available newbies" type lenses. The odds of that right now are pretty slim.

With available bodies from other brands at $400 and under and readily available with people switching to mirrorless, I don't understand why people who want cheap haven't gone for it. When you can get a body and 150-600 for half the cost of the K-3iii, what's the downside?

I would love to pay that much - at least I would be able to buy such a lens for Pentax
I am desparately waiting for something longer than DA*300 for years.

I recommend the 150-450 😉

Its too short. I am using 300+1,4 which gives me 420 and after cropping out the vignette its a bit more... still too short. I don't believe that 150-450 will give me too much of a difference in IQ and in reach

But I see that you have both options...

The IQ of the 150-450 is much, much better than DA* 300 + DA 1.4, and you get a bit more reach. On the downside it's heavier and a bit more expensive, but totally worth it

I agree with timautin. I tried to substitute the 300 + 1.4 a few years ago but it was clearly inferior to the 150-450 in both speed and iq.
