Pentax lenses - only SDM from now on?

Is it just me or does it seem like all the new lenses coming out will be SDM + manual focus only? In other words, does it look like Pentax is getting rid of screw mount autofocus?

I'm thinking of getting a DA 21 Limited, but was going to get the DA* primes coming out. However, since I have the old K100D, I can't use SDM only lenses (except in manual mode). Hmm...

Thoughts?

Official release said they're going to a two-level approach, as opposed to the 2 in 1 of the older DA*'s.

Limiteds, consumer zooms, etc will all be screw drive. DA*/ some high grade will be SDM only. The bodies of the future will all support screw drive for quite some time.

Guess you'll be fence sitting. I traded up to a k10 from my k100 for that reason, then missed the clean high ISO.

When the 17-70 launched, they released a FAQ in which they stated screwdrive wasn't going away, and would continue to launch new screw drive lenses. It was implied these would be the more compact type of lenses where SDM may not fit.

In the FAQ they did also state that from now on lenses would be either screw drive or SDM, and not both, like the current DA* zooms are.

As long as they are not both. I would much rather a better SDM mechanism than one that is prone to failing. I do feel insecure knowing that my 50-135 is quite prone to faliure possibly due to the size of the motor driving the focusing.

I don't think so.

Cheaper zooms and limited small primes will stay screwdrive only.

The others would probably benefit from being SDM only (read "cheaper").

I only wish Pentax had chosen to go for the better SDM system (ring-type: silent AND faster) instead of going to the compromise (only silent but probably cheaper and easily compatible with the dual-focusing mechanism) when they chose to switch to ultrasonic focusing.

Speed is not my #1 requirement (precise and reliable is enough) but it would be nice to have both...

They specifically said they would not be both in future. I understand the DA* 60-250 has both systems (likely due to its long development time), but that newer lenses, such as the 17-70, and the DA* 55 are/will be SDM only.

SDM only lenses can be recognised because they have a mount designation of KAF3, and SDM written in red letters on the model name plate. Lenses with screw drive are designed as being KAF2 mount (this includes the DA* lenses with both screw drive and SDM).
