Actually they did design a FA 90/3.5 Macro Limited in the film days that never saw the light of day. It went to 0.5x but either a close focusing lens or an extension tube that made it go to 1:1, was to be included with the lens.
Ditched in favour of the FA 100/3.5 Macro (designed by Cosina) or posterior to the latter?

I would never have thought of that notion. Not sure how it is related to the introduction of this new fantastic lens.
The Contax line had some really great lenses, many of which have since been "Leitaxed" for the K mount. But the quality of those lenses did not save the Contax system. It just became too expensive and specialized. Towards the end, its main market was in its homeland, Germany, just like Pentax now seems to regard Japan as its main market.

No need for hope.
There is for those of us who would like Pentax to survive and thrive. If you are not one of them, then indeed you may have no need for hope.

If you need the cash, sure. But the rendering of the DFA with its fancy optics will differ from that of the Zeiss, which does it all with spherical components. And the Zeiss will continue to work on any K mount camera. Not to mention the longer focal length (even more so as the Zeiss is more like 26mm).

Let's just hope that they don't make themselves as irrelevant as the Contax became at the end.
Pentax is moving in the right direction. Every lens release makes perfect sense.

If you ask for FF, you need glass to cover FF. Large aperture, special specs is what is moving the market these days. There will be a line of 3 DFA* prime with f/1.4, a line of 4 Ltds, as well as a line of three large aprture and three medium aperture zooms. APSC is covered with compact design, here we may see a longer high end zoom soon to be complete. Tele land needs some extra work, but it will happen after supply chain shortages end and road map adjustments.have been made.

Zeiss surely thought the same, back in the days of the Contax.

Contax/Zeiss flopped because they didn't have an AF system with modern AF lenses, the not very successful 645 system that must have costed a fortune to develop, and the ill fated 6mp FF DSLR. Pentax have never been in the same boat...

Not so much the money, its just that I try to limit myself to one lens per focal size - the close focus rendering of the Zeiss is one of its best attributes and was something that I hoped the 21 would share (which is looks to do ) so the 21 would be matched against the 25 and the loser would move onto a different home.

Interesting that the lens cap and leatherette bag are separate from the lens itself - dunno whether or not to applaud for cheekiness or snort in disgust!

Someone riding the sunshine road?

I liked Contax, but they were not this German producer catering the homemarket before they left the race. They belonged to Yashica that became a part of Kyocera in the 80s. They dropped the ball with the development of the FF digital camera, that they could not sell because of poor performance.

However, why is this thread discussing this at all? Some obviously need their daily dose of negativity.

And Pentax were right there with them, stuck with that Philips sensor.

Because many Pentax users have expressed their concerns that the DFA LTD is completely outside their price range.

You do seem to be getting high on it.

Web shops tend to show related items so that you can replace lost bits. It seems the cap and case are included in the box. For EUR1500 one would hope so.

Now we need a gallery from that japanese site with the good photographers!

How to attach a lens square filter kit (100mm, 130mm or 150mm) if the lens hood is fixed? Does it create a vignette
