I believe it's a requirement of the Sony system, not the Pentax system.
I think you are correct.

Good to know. Weird things have sometimes happened with “similar” lenses. The FA 50/1.4 even had versions that had internal differences that caused issues for some users of the adapter.

Indeed, especially considering that the internals have definitely been updated between the SMC and HD versions.

it also works on extension tubes on the sony body... no reason it wouldn't, but tried it out with the 100 today.

body > ext tubes > monster adapter > k-mount lens

body > ext tubes > monster adapter > k-mount lens
Since there's no modification of the data flow I would expect this. Good to confirm it however. I assume the tubes are the kind that maintain data connections and focus?

yep, any ol' e-mount extension tubes... i haven't seen any that don't have contacts. no vignetting on the 100, haven't tried others yet.

Ack! The tubes could be on either side of the adapter. I was assuming on the k mount side and not the e Mount side.

Can you be more specific?

Mauybe? The person I was responding to might be able to expand on it but here's the link to what I responded to: Monster Adapter Magic Ring Pentax K Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Adapter - Page 14 - PentaxForums.com

Essentially, as I understand things the Sony system needs much more info than the Pentax compatible lenses provide - so the adapter has to make up some data to make the camera think these are valid E mount lenses. Things are so specific that some lenses have not been possible to create profiles to make them work. The D FA 24-70 and D FA 15-30 come to mind. It's not a simple task apparently - unlike what it would seem.

That is correct. The Sony system is "open", luckily, meaning that what the lens needs to supply is known, but Pentax lenses do not supply all this info by themselves, so the makers of the adapter need to embed this extra information for each lens (which in turn means "learning" all that information). Then the adapter needs to recognize the lens and supply the info accordingly.

I am pretty sure more precise focusing distance is part of it. Don’t ask me how they infer that! I don’t honestly know the designer used to be more accessible to me but he stopped responding.

Honestly seems too expensive. Like if you have an extensive collection of Pentax glass and really need to shoot with them on your Sony and need the auto focus, then I guess it seems worth it. But I can't imagine many people would want this at the price point.

And yet it sells. And I’ve been asked if mine was available by more than one user.
