That's a telephoto zoom designed for 16mm cameras. APS-C is close to the Super35 format, a bit bigger than 35mm and much bigger than 16mm.

It's not about obfuscation, the corresponding lens is obvious...

...in particular when the lens diagrams of the numerical examples in the patent application correspond to the lens diagram of a product that was released in the meantime (between filing and publication), in this case the HD Pentax-DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW.

That's a 3.3x telezoom, not a 5.5x trans-standard lens (going from wide to tele).

I'm still holding out for the HD PENTAX Super Takumar D FA 645 Limited 8mm-2000mm f/1.2 ED AW WR SR TS with the 77mm filter threads at the back, and Ricoh 100% photon capture guarantee. The older version I have doesn't have the Tilt-Shift capabilities or the new HD coatings.

To prevent a third party from using the corresponding invention for a lens with a very different focal length. If all numerical examples were for a 16-50mm f/2.8, said third party could claim that the patent only prevents them to design such 16-50mm f/2.8 lenses.
This makes sense.

I'm sure they can put a PLM in replacement of the ring SDM in the actual 18-135...
Probably not.

They'd need to make a ring SDM version of the 18-135 DC first

I'm holding out for the 16-250mm F1.4 DFA*. I hear it will be available by next Christmas.

The only question is will it have a detachable tripod foot.
Oops I forgot. It also will weigh less in than a pound. (450g)

Why would you suggest, on such a zoom, an f/1.2 aperture? That's absolutely unreasonable.

F/0.95 is where it's at these days.

It's a Limited, so it would be F/0.97 or something, just to be different

Indeed, they would have to.

Well I was hoping for the weight reduction I'd get with a smaller aperture - it's few Kg from 0.97 to 1.2. The carbon-fibre wrist strap from Peak Designs won't hold the f/0.97 version.

Is this the new "what lens are you wishing they would make?" thread?

These days?

Canon was marketing the f0.95 "Dream Lens" in the early '60s!

You need to do better than that!

P.S. It got a bit of a bad rep because of its ultra thin DOF with rangefinder focusing. When I use on my Sony A7II it is sharp and easier to focus.
