Adapting it to fit in with their plans for the future and fitting it into that schedule is probably what's taking time...

They have plans?
That's funny.

I handled 60-250 f4 SDM today

I got a January launch date from pentax rep at a local show today. Its an OK lens, I handled it and shot some with it and his K10D and K20D. It doesn't seem as fast as 50-135mm SDM and it does hunt focus in a crowded room. Its not on my shopping list due to crazy high launch price. What is it like $1500 plus? I paid $1469 for my 70-200 2.8L IS Eos lens brand new in march 2008 and it doen't hunt and offers insanely fast autofocus. So I got this focal length covered. If I visit show again tomorrow I'll see if it vignettes on my ZX-L Film body viewfinder. Maybe its possible they redesigned it to no vignette full frame. I'm curious to see if its looks good at 60mm on film body. No 55mm 1.4 SDM at show, No 1.4x SDM at show. But he did have ring light. Comes with 5 ring adapters so you can use on alot of lenses.

It was probably worse before Hoya. The original DA*60-250/4 announcement predates the Hoya take-over, so it's not *completely* in their hands.

Two quotes from Mr. Hamada, COO, from the published summary of Hoya's financial results meeting for the three months ended September 30, 2008 (Tokyo, November 10, 2008). (see: http://www.hoya.co.jp/english/investor/2009_2Q_meeting_summary.pdf)

"Not as fast as 50-135SDM..."? that's quite a statement! Given my experience with the 50-135SDM on the AF speed front (certainly not its strong point) I sure hope you're wrong...

When I handled the 60-250, it seemed a bit faster than the 50-135 due to a shorter focus throw but did hunt quite a bit, especially at the long end in the pretty good light of the exhibition (1/125s f4 ISO 400).

But what was worst was the bad IQ: did you have the chance of taking a few pictures? Were they OK?

No Pix

I didn't take my K20D. I just handled pentax reps SDM lenses and his dslrs. So no test pixs for me just my impressions firing off some shots. It is light and well balanced though. I'm sure it will please if image quality is there. In the past 18 months I've always found 50-135 2.8 most appealing in speedy focus and his sample of 16-50 2.8 was very sharp in the viewfinder. Surprisingly he said he's only process a couple returns on this one so maybe the defective ones get resold to other buyers instead of being sent back for defects to Pentax.

Probably best to wait and see on 60-250 SDM. I was surprised he said january so maybe just 30 days to go? PMA is not till what March I think so that date makes better sense to me for new item launches.

We're going to have to wait since I'm sure all the 60-250's handled thus far are prototypes or early production samples, hence the differences in the lenses handled at different shows.

On a French store that sells on ebay 370129104701 it is said to be on pre-order and available in January.
Those guys are official Pentax retailers, I don't see them listing and selling an item that won't be available until mid-2009....

Except if they didn't notice (or did not want to) that it was postponed again recently.

For the price iu have seen on the net, suggested sale price, i can get a D300 and use my fast Nikon glass.

Why is it all Pentax lenses hunt, can't they buy a Nikon or canon fast lens and take it apart to see how it works?

Patents ? Seeing how something works isn't *that* hard. Doing the same in another way (because of patents) is something else.

I believe this is because the double ended loop algorithms in the AF systems instead of single ended. This means that Pentax AF thinks more.

that and don't forget the pentax af double check, many seem to confuse it with hunting.

Pentax.... you've blown all your credibility if you had any left with anyone at this time.

And to think there were members who took offense with me & my attitude several months ago when I was extremely skeptical of this lens's supposed imminent release @ that time! ... What a joke, Pentax corporate...

I already said my part, I'm not waiting on this lens anymore, it has the perfect focal length if it is sharp wide open but even then there are other options and the delay means the events I would have used this at ( Trinidad carnival, jazz fest etc ) will be over before I see it on my K20D. A 50-135 or sigma 70-200 it is.
