SONY (In the Sh@#)

Sony Slimming Down - Forbes.com

It looks like PENTAX got out of the SONY bed at the right time.. Samsung may a bit more stable at the momment for PENTAX. Were as for Nikon?
"However, cash-rich Samsung has fared better of late than heavily-indebted Sony, boosted by the won's slide, which has made South Korean exports cheaper "

Hope you are happy with what you have

Sounds to me like the usual announcements of new models every year might be at an end for a while. Good news is if there is something out there you want, wait for the after Christmas sales.

I've seen news today - said that Sony would cut 16000 jobs in photo and LCD division and close 5 plants till the spring of 2009.

K-m is more right move in crisis time than A900.

the biggest question is what sort of jobs are being cut?

is it people at the manufacturing level in the factories, or people in marketing, or R&D??

I think for once Pentax may have played the cards right. Think about the world's economy right now. They haven't introduced a new camera, esp. FF, in a while, minus the KM. So they introduced an entry level kit at a low price when money is tight, but people want to get into a DSLR.

Do you think people are going to drop thousands on new FF cameras right not? Or even a new APS one? No way! I'm happy with my K20 and K10s for now. They get the job done and are very affordable!!

I'd just like to see Pentax open the marketing wallet up and advertise the K20 and KM in the photo mags I get every month!

Way to go Pentax! Looks like you may have dodged a bullet!!

I am not content about SONY not doing well! As they make great gear and have a very smart R&D. Just think if Pentax went down the Full Frame road like SONY? Pentax pockets are not as deep or as large as Sony. Sony now have to get a return on there FF investment in a down market, were as Canikon got there return on FF way before the global meltdown.

Suzuki never answered that question when it was asked in a straight fashion. It was actually advanced nations that they had down sized by 200 people. I would have to guess that it was marketing but it is purely a guess.

The 200 people hoya cut were more apart of the merger and re structure or the Pentax Hoya HD company. As with all mergers there will be job duplications. why have 2 finance departments when you just need One!

Canon is overwhelmed w/ New 5D mark II Orders

There are many prepaid 5D2 orders from September 17th foward that Canon cannot fully fill yet. This is a $2699 body or $3499 with kit lens. Recession or not manyaround the globe have already paid the admission price and are hoping for a Christmas delivery. It will likely not happen because demand has outstripped manufacturing ability.

That said, I hate buying new dslrs freshly launched and again I must add how incredibly impressed with Pentax K20D I bought 30 days ago once the price settled down and that got me interested. ISO 1600 Rocks!

If you are on the fence considering K20D , buy it now before we go from Recession to Depression and before its upgrade launches for two times the money, again.

Mergers can be a lot more complicated than that. These were just the Pentax people. It was not a merger in reality. Hoya acquired Pentax and turned it into a division. I suspect the world economy had just as much to do with it. I get the impression from Suzuki that there could be more shrinkage coming for the "consumer" side of Pentax.
