Yes. I was talking about the reported resolution requirement, though, not about sensel response. The actual sensor being used seems to be a lot smaller than APS-C.

Does it count as astrophotography if you're taking pictures <from> space?

I hope they get some cool shots...

Will they use it wide open only, I wonder?

What's really boiling my bottom is... is it still astrophotography if you're taking pictures of Earth, from space?

The vast majority of cameras in space are looking down, not up. George Orwell was right.

Earth is an "astre", a visible natural celestial body.

By my calculation, the resolution requirement of 5m at 400km equates to 3.75 microns at the focal plane, whereas the Sony 36MP sensor in the K-1 has a reported sensel size of 4.88 microns. If that’s accurate, there’s no question of the sensor out-resolving that lens, but it leads me to wonder how it would go against a higher resolution sensor.

Anyway, good on them for choosing a Pentax lens, when there were other options available.
Now watch the used-market price increase on this fine lens!

They will need to have the lubrication changed as well

From back in the day,

Hasselblad cameras taken to the moon had to be completely rebuilt and reassembled with special lubricants and tolerances - same guy that worked on my Hasselblads btw. Metal surfaces need to be certified to be sure they don't spontaneously weld to other metal surfaces. Temperature cycling to make sure everything mechanical works in the cold. Electronics will need to be certified as well. This will cost Ricoh plenty. Be careful what you wish for.

One way of making money out of this investment IS to produce and sell a "SILVER KITSUNE LIMITED EDITION" version for c.a. 2000 copies of new coated HD D(F)A*300mm f/4 lens.

/ Ricoh Imaging's new marketing orientation compliant.

Any lens it wants, but you tend to get them back in bad shape. :P
