Introducing profiles that mess with the Limiteds' rendering kind of defeats the intended object of them.
Why? It works in same way like using different films in analog cameras.

I am looking at them at my never calibrated laptop ThinkPad E580 15,6'' screen and I like KATEN more then BRIGHT (not to mention SATOBI)

With firmware you usually replace the whole thing. The file size of the firmware does not reflect the amount of change. The K-3 III firmware being larger is probably due to more or higher resolution graphical elements for the gui. Images always take up a lot of space.

I found various firmware sizes in a similar thread on the Digital Camera Review's forum:

I noticed the difference in file sizes (different updates for a single model are similar size):
  • K-5 - 9.9MB
  • K-01 - 10.5MB
  • K-3 - 14.1MB
  • K-70 - 8.3MB
  • KP - 9.1MB
  • K-3iii - 30.7MB
  • GR IIIx - 27.5MB
Source: New function expansion firmware for Pentax K1, K1II, K3III cameras: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Note the "different updates for a single model are similar size" part.

The sensible difference in firmware size between K-3 Mark III and Ricoh GR III on the one hand, former cameras on the other hand might be linked to the first two using a different, Android-based OS.

Hi, JPT. Could you please give the source news? Thank you in advance.
It was direct mail. I get and email from Ricoh every Friday with a variety of links in it to articles and offers.

This particular item linked to a promotional page of the online store that required a code to reveal. I don’t feel like I have the right to just post the code so you can access.

You can get this email by signing up for a Ricoh Photo ID on the Japan store page. You need a Japanese address, I think.

In any case, the discounts are not huge, but I think they reveal some of the intention to sell lenses through this firmware initiative.

I tried the KATEN setting today, but the sky was a bit too misty to make it look good. Also, I’m truly rubbish with ultra wide lenses. I just can’t get used to composing with anything wider than the 18mm of the GR.

No clouds unfortunately. I understood that to be an important part of the style.

FWIW, 夏天 (ka-ten) means summer heaven, or in this case "summer sky" would be a more appropriate translation. I don't know why pelople are upset about this. If you can use it, do, if you can't, don't.

Yup.

And it still may include some important undisclosed fixes, which based on my experience this morning on my Saturday hike may have come with improved tracking performance with this one. I'll see how repeatable it is tomorrow as I have another wildlife hike planned.

Regarding FW size: the new K-3 iii AE-Sensor is much bigger. It could also be linked to the image comparison database.

What does KATEN style {a verbal explanation} consist of?
Why would some one want it - especially someone who doesn’t live in Japan?

The GR III / GR IIIx firmware has almost the same size as the K-3 Mark III firmware (and three times the size of the GR II firmware), yet the former has no AE-sensor.

The size of the firmware is OS-related, not AF-related.
  • K-1 Mark II: 8,955 kB
  • KP: 9,108 kB
  • K-3 Mark II: 14,159 kB
  • K-3 Mark III: 30,799 kB
  • GR II: 8,537 kB
  • GR III / GR IIIx: 27,456 kB

A proprietary embedded os is likely to be smaller than even a highly tuned and optimized linux installation. In addition, as I mentioned before, there are probably many more icons shipped for the ui.

It emphasizes the blue of the sky, and also increases saturation of the green in the photo. KATEN, I guess, means "summer sky", so the idea seems to be that it emphasizes the summery aspects in photos then with that setting.

I've had a prototype since 2007

I wonder if they will eventually roll all these lens-specific profiles into more broadly applicable general profiles.
Ricoh has done that with the GRIII special editions in the past, where the new stuff was rolled out in the general firmware update a few months later.

Thank to let know. Weren't you asking for a low cost, 24Mpixels version of the K1 in the past? You probably changed your mind.
