It depends. Sometimes modifications are much harder than starting from scratch, if there are pre-existing constraints that you have to respect.
In this case it is minor external change for a more modern look and applying a small optical change most likely designed by Ricoh (if there is an optical change at all).

Thanks for the update.

The pre-announcement of this lens with it just showing up on the roadmap makes me wonder if this will be the policy going forward.

In this case the lens was added to the roadmap the day after Ricoh held the "PENTAX Meeting Online 2022 Summer" where they showed the lens.
??????????????????????????PENTAX ?????? ????? 2022 ?????? | CAPA CAMERA WEB

I do not really think this will be the standard procedure to announce products in the future.
It is probably more that they wanted something extra to show at the online meeting for the opening of the "Pentax Clubhouse".
But we will have to wait and see.

Sheesh, a new optical design is what they are talking about in the press release. Did you miss that part?

There's been all manner of odd comments in this thread. Probably best avoided, honestly.

Which press release from Tonika are you taking about?

Go back and read the op. Not a press release, I used the wrong words, but new optics are indicated.

Fogel70's post was referring to the existing Tokina 100/2.8 macro, not the upcoming replacement for the DFA100WR.

Let's keep things a little less snippy

Sorry. I made the mistake of thinking we were still talking about the subject of the thread.

ROFL! If you haven't noticed, threads occasionally drift a little off topic.

Anyway, discussing another brand's 100mm macro, in the context of speculating about the design of this new lens, doesn't seem too much of a stretch to me

And after all, at least in the past the Tokina 100mm macro was a clone of the Pentax design. We have to see if that may also be true for the ATX-i version of the Tokina, and the upcoming version of the Pentax.
Or if Tokina only have license for using Pentax "older" design.

Well, if Tokina can put a limiter, so can Pentax IMO.
I'd be surprised they'd change optical formula "just because".

I think it is more that Tokina kept the limiter switch from earlier Pentax F/FA version.
The whole Tokina lens design reminds a lot of these older Pentax versions.

Pentax removed the limiter switch on the first D FA version and put a clamp on instead.
