Tamron lens changes - SDM only?

I was in one of my local camera shops yesterday talking with the owner about macro lenses (I was looking for extension tubes and good 50mm second hand - no go there - seems the second hand market over here is very tight - it comes in, and goes out the door again within days).

We got onto the Tamron 90mm lens and I said how I was very keen on one - so what was his price (its been under AUD$600 for a months now)? The answer was ~AUD$800 - What?

He stated that Tamron were dumping old non-motor Pentax mount lenses for the SDM version. Effectively because Canikon mount lenses will all have motors on board. Hence the price rise.

Has anyone else heard this story? 'Cause if its so, I'm putting in my order now......

The owner fed you a load of bulls**t. Tamron does not do and never has done lenses with ultrasonic motors.

But Tamron does have internal motor lenses (e.g., the Tamron 28-75 for Nikon so it'll work on the D40).
That said, real ring motor HSM technology (not sure there is a Pentax SDM lens that uses this yet but Sigma's HSM, Nikon's and Canon's use this technology) is much faster and precise...

All canon mount lens must have in-lens motor.

For Nikon, Tamron has been updating the non-motorized lenses to in-lens motors. 90mm is such a lens. This is the brand that Tamron is dumping the non-motors for.

For Sony and Pentax mount, I assume screw-drive would be faster and cheaper, so Tamron lenses in those mounts should remain screw-drive.

Price rises from sigma, tamron, pentax etc in Australia are all standard price rises due to increased costs at manufacturers end. AFAIK tamron price rise is set for after Jan 1, 2009 for at least 15% increase in price.

not to mention that the dollar has lost 30% of it's value in the last 6 months.

Damn ... if that's the case I'd need to upgrade my firmware to 1.3 on my K10D ... I have been hold of on that for a while now .. as I am pretty happy with 1.10 for so long.

Oh ... if you want the 90mm Macro ... get it ... it's an awesome lens and still well worth the $$$$$ (it's $589 on digital camera warehouse website if you still want it at the lower price)

I'd love the get the 70-200 f/2.8 ... but I am save up for a bub on the way.

And I'll have to join you - our hot water service just died (early Christmas present?) and I'm afraid that even with govt. rebates, the Tamron 90mm just disappeared over the horizon........
