That sexy silver change any minds?
I may have changed my mind about not being in the first wave of purchasers.
My silver DFA21, FA31, FA43 and FA77 might need this stablemate....

In fact, it can be determined that the optical design has not changed. Before, Pentax did not mark the ED, but now it does. That ED has always existed.
The officially introduced dispersion improvement is most likely based on the improvement of tolerance control. It can be referred to the dispersion gap between engineering samples and mass products of DFA*50.
This improvement is AW and coating.
Please don't spread alternative facts.

1. ED means Extra-low Dispersion glass. It's a standard naming. It has nothing to do with any improvement in tolerance control.

2. The smc WR version has 9 elements in 8 groups. None of its lens elements are made of ED glass or glass with anomalous partial dispersion. How can I be so affirmative? Because of the corresponding patent and the examples it includes http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4770516.pdf

3. The HD AW version announced today has 10 elements in 8 groups, of which one element made of ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and two elements made of glass with anomalous partial dispersion.

Those are two different optical designs.

I think this must be the fastest ever delivery of a roadmapped lens for Pentax. Less than three months from development announcement to release?

Thanks. I knew I could count on you to provide the dates! Youre like Siri but actually useful.

Why exactly did they have to go and make it silver? I just dropped off my Tamron 90/2.5 to have its screwdrive looked at!
Be still my wallet.

Anybody knows how this "FREE (Fixed Rear Element Extension)" autofocus works? Also is the lens KAF4?

Same as the FA 77mm. It does not move the rear element while focusing. Dunno about the mount.

KAF mount, neither KAF3 not KAF4 since autofocus is screw-driven.

Moving front and internal lens groups. The 100/2.8 macros have used a FREE design since the Pentax-A 100/2.8. The specifications don't mention an in-lens motor, nor would there be enough space, so it seems to continue to use classic screwdriver coupling.

The product images show an aperture lever, so that seems to be unchanged as well.

If the rendering is indeed as nice as the sample images suggest, I may be able to go down from three to two longish (100mm+) macros. I'm especially curious how the foreground blur will look like - my least favorite aspect of the DFA100WR.

Good job for me.. but in hypothesis it could have an internal engine such as the 20-40 limited?

Well at least it is still very affordable Compared to Canon or Nikon SLR 100/105mm macro's. New coatings, improved optics and better weather sealing. A total new design would probably have been well over a thousand.

Comparing HD Pentax-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 Limited DC WR Lens Photo - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database and http://kmp.pentaxians.eu/wp-content/uploads/bojidar/lenses/primes/_optics/100f2.8-Macro-iii.gif (DFA100WR) may give you an idea on why that would likely be a very different task. A lot bigger glass to be moved over a lot longer distances. I am very happy that the new lens stays as compact as the current, a very unique advantage. Even the current MF 3rd party offerings are a lot bigger an heavier (Tamron's 90mm was probably the closest).
