Yes. In-lens motors are specified in Pentax nomenclature (SDM, DC, etc.)

In the mount denomination too:
  • KAF: screw drive
  • KAF2: screw drive + in-lens motor
  • KAF3: in-lens motor only
  • KAF4: in-lens motor, electronic aperture control

The HD Pentax‐D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW is specified as KAF.

Yes, it is.

DC motor would fit this lens more than original noisy screw driven AF.

So, I give the lens a quick rest at work. Just put it on my K-1 and took a few shots mainly to see a difference between WR and ED AW versions...

Lens is almost identical to WR version even the hood is the same part number as the older version :-)

From reflections on both front and rear elements you can see differences in color - new coatings are clearly there :-)

Crops from SOOC jpegs shot at F2.8:

Annoying CA of original WR version.

New AW version with ED element is not suffering from CA. Finally! The question is astro - but the weather doesn’t seem to get better anytime soon.

Subjectively speaking, I think the new lens is a little bit sharper than WR.

Details:

Glad the K-1 has a Wi-Fi so I could download the SOOC jpegs to my phone and upload them.

Nice, thanks for the comparison!

Is that a little purp and green in the upper right on the new lens pic? And bokeh grapes too...

Mine should land Monday in brutal cold...we'll see how it likes that!

Looks like a nice upgrade. I thought I had signed up to be notified about both the black and the silver on both Ricoh and B&H but haven’t received an email - I could have opted for the black only though. And I still can’t order one until I get back somewhere around the 1st or 2nd (sigh).

Has anyone else received theirs yet?

I spoke to a very helpful guy at CR Kennedy's head office yesterday. Apparently, Australia is only getting THREE silver copies!
Also, he didn't think they would arrive until December, which is a little disappointing.

Those test shots are encouraging

Amazon declared it will start shipping black version starting Dec 11.

I have ordered Silver one on B&H a night before they officially announced them via e-mail. I have chatted with them couple times (last time 2 days ago) and they continued to talk "Pentax did not provide us dates yet."

Given that the type of fringing I always got was the purple with the now old SMC D FA 100/2.8 WR Macro the lack of it in the shot you provided would lead one to believe that it would be a good performer for astro. Also I would agree that it may be a bit sharper wide open from your test shots which again bodes well for astro.

But that would step on the toes of the DFA* 50 f/1.4, so is unlikely.

Somehow, yes. But a modern revamped (with DC motor?) DFA50/1.7 would be cool.

True. But a 50/1.7 was the kit lens in film days, and that has been supplanted by a wide-medium zoom. It probably doesn't have the universal appeal it used to.

No but two 50/1.4 in the range is a bit weird. For now there's the old one and the new one. Revamping the old 1.4 would be VERY weird IMO.
The 1.7 would be a different proposition.

Btw the kit lens rather was the 50/2 wasn't it ?
