Light fluff but news.. sort of

Adoramas brief retrospect:
Seems Nikon and Canon have a new body to compete with........
Adorama News Desk: Photography 2008: The wrap-up

Megapixel madness led us to new levels of insanity...and DSLRs you probably can't afford. I'm not sure how many photographers will be able to afford a RED, the new "DSLR killer" that accepts Canon and Nikon lenses and starts in the $2,500 range for a 4.9MP basic camera module and goes up into the $50,000 stratosphers for a camera with a medium format 261MP sensor. Whoever still has enough money to play with such expensive toys, please raise your hand. I thought so Then there are the 50-plus megapixel monsters from Hasselblad and Leaf, and the new 37MP, 30x45mm Leica R9, all demanding 5-figure prices. Come on, people, these are cameras, not powerboats......................
...............
Olympus kept making tiny, innovative DSLRs and building its tough line of waterproof compact cameras, while Pentax, in the middle of a corporate restructuring under new parent company Hoya, delivered a handful of small, innovative cameras. Meanwhile, Sony introduced a 24MP, full-frame DSLR, signalling that they were getting serious about playing with the big boys. Will they have better luck than Minolta did as the traditional #3 camera maker? Time will tell.

Best to start saving for the RED.........
RED DSLR Camera - PhotographyBLOG
RED are taking on Canon and Nikon by launching a DSLR camera that can shoot stills and video. Just one of the many options in a brand new and completely modular system, you can configure exactly how you want your camera to be, with two different “brains” available (Scarlet and EPIC), 6 different Mysterium-X sensor sizes (including 617 / 186x56mm!), and literally millions of different combinations. The killer headline? Nikon and Canon mounts are supported! If you’ve ever wanted to create your own DSLR camera, this is your first ever opportunity (albeit an expensive one).
check out the photos and sensor sizes.......Oh no square ones.... 186x56mm

No thanks! I'd have to start pumping iron again to get into shape to just lift the darn thing. Plus it doesn't have that "Swiss Mystique".

Sounds like a very expensive way to go. An upgradeable DSLR camera body sounds like a great idea though. Replace the sensor when new ones are developed, upgrade the firmware and even plug in circuit boards. Perhaps the future of photography? A camera body along the lines of the standard computer ATX tower/motherboard? The camera makers will probably sue the crap out of them or force them to pay outrageous licensing fees to use the lens mounts.

Well, upgredable DSLR was one ot the taughts that came into my mind after Ben's rumor... as that is one of the things widely avalible in DSLR.

Maybe not such a modular. all customizable, design, but more as key components, that make users switch cameras. Might be sensor, processing electronics, or all this as one block. Who needs to redesign for example batery compartment or change good body, only for more megapixels, iso performance or something similar... pentaprism, card slots, lens mounts, built in flash, mirror systems, AF motors does not have to be "updated" so often as digital technologies evolve.... of course it makes sense only if those "unchanging" features are on high enough level, to support better electronics.

Btw. First thing that pops in mind after Ben saying fast and big memory cards is HD video... didnt seem to notice it anywhere in that big, long post...

Sorry about my English and not quite matching topic.

Yes because it's going to be cheaper to develop viewfinders, backs and bodies separately and to match a myriad of existing and yet-to-be-invented other components. Some medium format cameras are made like that. Look up how much they cost.

Some medium format cameras aren't made like that and cost about the same.
