$300 off

5D Launch August 2005 was $3299 where it sat for months because at that point one needed to drop $8,000 on a full frame eos dslr.

5DII launch is $2699. I had one in my hands yesterday for $2699 but I don't buy any brand new imaging items locally anymore. And I'm taking a minimum year pass on 5D2 or may skip it entirely. I'm not a fan of 20+ mp dslrs. 12mp and 15mp and 6mp serve me fine.

So you're coincidentally off by $300 in both directions. $3300 and $2700.

What I said was the 5DII listed price is 3000, which is the same as 5D when it first came out three years ago. Therefore, we should assume the 5DIII will have the same listed price when it come out three years from now.

But I agree with the sentiment that the the price of low end FF bodies will continue to drop. Maybe the 50D successors one or two cycles down the road will be a FF.

Folks, Really, there is no full frame Pentax DSLR coming anytime soon, likely never.. One only has to look an the current line of Pentax lenses to see this...

Infact for most shooters like myself the 1.5crop factor is a huge bonus. Since I like birding and using telephoto lenses in general this is an added + There is plenty of wide angle lenses out so that is a none issue. Image quality, Well from what I have seen both on the web and in print, even the most pixel peeper measurabator would have a hard time telling which is which..Noise? Well Pentax has done a great job with the K20D?

There is only one thing I personally like about full frame and that is the view finders...I love the view finders. Those who have use an ME SUPER will know what I am talking about.

For aps-c K20D viewfinder is The Best

I own a couple samsung DS2 clones. Eventhough the DS2 clone and K20D viewfinders spec the same I find K20D far superior. far superior meaning I can manually focus K20D with confidence. So Pentax has improved the K20D viewfinder and/or focus screen over identical spec'd earlier pentaprisms.

Full frame viewfinder is still King. But K20D is a very good compromise

Why not 645D? That would have a real viewfinder!
Unfortunatelly, not even top pro DSLRs won't have a viewfinder similar to the one from the ME Super. That's the price we had to pay for autofocus (is that spelled right? Or it's called out-of-focus?)

Why not 645D? I've spent less than $15,000

Contrary to popular $3,000 myth 645D will launch at $15,000.

I added & completed my Eos 5D system (ALL) this year for $ 9,900

What did $9,900 outlay get me?

Two 5D

16-35mm 2.8L II

24-70mm 2.8L

70-200mm 2.8L IS

300mm f4L IS

50mm 2.5 Macro

100mm 2.8 Macro

1.4x II

2x II

all brand new all boldly marked Made in Japan, Canon.

Had K20D not launched so high: $1299 I would have likely not added and completed my eos system this year. AND I grew tired of the annual full frame K Mount rumours.

Anyone else notice pentax revised K20D issue to $999 around Halloween 2008, What was that about? Did the many $1,299 buyers of K20D get a check in the mail for difference?

So one 645D and maybe one kit lens, and if I recall correctly thats (((not))) going to be "full frame" 645D would have instead run me an additional $5,100 for equiptment I have available to use now. Oh, and thats if 645D were available for sale today or last 5 years its been roadmapped.

Why not 645D? I cannot afford it had it been available this year and I could not afford it over last 5 years its been roadmapped to launch.

Anyways, over the years I acquired both geniune 645 to K Mount and 6x7 to K Mount adapters and with my simple $10 shanghi china made brass K Mount to eos mount adapters I already have a crop 645D glass and 6x7D lens platform via full frame 24x36mm format. I wonder how big or cropped the 645D is supposed to be? Maybe I already own both?

See my pics of my 645 and 6x7 dslr, if you're intersted:

you're kidding, right? Do you really expect electronic devices not to drop in price?

I have to agree with all of that Javier. I've done some very big enlargements from my K20D and very happy with the quality. The sensor holds up well. The only thing that would be nice is a VF closer to the old film cameras but as someone stated, AF has changed all that. I have a PZ-1 and it's VF isn't much better than the K10/K20D VF. So I suspect a FF will be better or brighter but not anything like the old MF camera bodies.

I just can't see Pentax taking the risk right now on a FF body that might not sell that well due to a) price, b) demand, c)economic situations of many consumers.

The flagship FF models for other companies just are not the bulk of their business. It seems that these top tier models account for 5-10% of any suppliers line. The battle ground for sales and volume is still in the middle price ranges. If you look at the Sony lineup as an example they have 5 models. It makes some sense to have one of them as a flagship FF body. Plus Sony has huge $$ and infrastructure to push the line.
Pentax has never had more than 2 active models since the *istD was launched. With the launch of the KM we currently have 3 for the very first time. They don't seem to have the resources or desire yet to have a lineup that starts at something like the KM and steps up through 5-6 models to the flagship KxxD.

Add to that, new lenses. We've waited quite a while to have a decent compliment of Digital lenses and I can't see them launching a new FF and 6-10 lenses in a year, ready to sell. Anyone remember that the DA*60-250mm took around 2 years to get in the stores?

If Hoya really wanted to shake things up they would upgrade the AF and Frame Rate mechanics in a fashion that would transfer across the pro-enthusiast bodies, retool for those beautiful MESuper prisms and . . .

bring back the MZ-S with the new mechanics as a

Samsungian, how do you know that?
I mean, 3000$ is ridiculous, but so is 15000 (that's Hassie price level, you know? ).

Let's give you a hint: Pentax stated some time ago they are targeting "FF quality" (and not necessarily FF itself); the K20D already resolves at least as much detail as a 12MP FF camera at base ISO. Maybe 2009 has some nice surprises for us? Not the 645D (which I'm sure will be out of my reach) but a camera we can afford to like
It will be an interesting year, for sure!

Happy New Year anyone!

Thomas,

Sorry, can't help you with 645D pricing. It has not been set. I can offer that we'll likely be quite competitive in price vs the 31 mp Hassey, but no where near the $3-5k I've seen a few folks speculate on as the likely pricing on some photo forums. If one does a little research, you can find that the Kodak 31 mp sensor is not an inexpensive component.

Yes, but you can't say from those the 645D will cost 15000
That is, if they'll finally launch it.

So whats your guess on price?

645D "Price Competetive" with a $18,000 camera , so i took off about 17% and came up with my $15,000 guess. Two years ago the same hassy was well over $20,000. So the longer pentax waits the lower the launch price should be, right?

Whats your guess, you know 645D versus 18,000 hassy with same 31mp sensor?

As we know Pentax said they sidelined any full frame k mount plans in leiu of 645D so we might see this old roadmapped camera emerge in 2009 for $??.???

How much did he cost? Is he full frame? I have an APS unicorn but I'm hoping to upgrade soon.
