And don't forget IS that is supposed to add to Canon's prices (and it sure does, the only problem being that the non-IS versions from Canon are way cheaper than the Pentax's one... if Canon is gouging their user by charging them extra for IS, why are Pentax non IS lenses more expensive than Canon non IS ones? Doesn't that defeat one advantage of SR vs IS? ).

You really ought to be comparing the da* 50-135 f/2.8 as that's the equivalent of the 70-200mm canon lens. Many have said it's better than the canon 70-200mm!

"The smc-DA* 50 – 135mm covers the equivalent focal
length of 75 to 205mm in 35mm film format"http://media.pentax.co.uk/downloads/lenses/en/50-135%20specsheet.pdf

My sentiments exactly.

But you can use the 70-200 on an APS-C body resulting in an equivalent of 112 - 320.

Doesn't go as wide, but it trumps the Pentax lens for telephoto reach. Also has IS, weather sealing and constant f/2.8.

The 60-250 should be cheaper.

no. the 'reach' is still the same. it only has the FOV of 320mm. I do not understand why this continues to get mixed up. its just the same as saying 'a 50 is still a 50 is still a 50.' only the FOV is different. the magnification did not increase just because you now have a smaller diagonal image plane.

What about using 70-200mm 2.8L IS on a 50D 1.6x aps-c?

I gotta say the 70-200mm 2.8L IS is the best lens I've owned in its focal length zoom range. And I have read everyone is always happy with pentax 50-135mm 2.8 SDM. I kinda thought I was one of the few dual system owners:

Pentax & Canon

I hadn't read where the Pentax lens topped the Eos lens in hands on owner's surveys:

50-135mm 2.8 SDM Versus Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS

Anyways a couple points. I own Canon 1.4x II teleconverter and its an exceptional pairing with the 70-200mm 2.8L IS resulting in a respectable 98-280mm f4 IS on my full frame 5D. Both the lens and teleconverter are weathersealed and even include gaskets at lensmount which surprisingly pentax does not include on their SDM lenses.

Now I don't own a 6.3 frame per second 50D aps-c eos dslr but if I did then what would I have with same lens and then with TC 1.4x combo?

70-200mm 2.8L IS "becomes" 112-320mm 2.8L IS on 50D.

& with 1.4x Teleconverter its 179-512mm f4 Image stabilized supertelephoto zoom.

Sure I paid $265 for my Canon 1.4x II Teleconverter but as I had read on a few canon forums its exceptional with 70-200mm 2.8 and best of all it was available for sale.

I suppose if I wanted faster frame rate and if I believed crop isolated view crop factor gives me more reach then getting a Eos 50D may be a logial step for me. Thesedays 50D is $1069, which I feel is still way too high. I think it should be priced where nikon D90 is at thesedays so $850 tops.

Yeah that's nice but lets compare prices:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens = $1,453.88

Pentax SMC DA* Series 50-135mm f/2.8 ED IF SDM Telephoto Zoom Lens = $699.95

Prices from amazon.com

and when pentax release the sdm converter you'll be able to do the same with your 50-135 as your 70-200mm.

Because so many mag rags etc keep referring to it that way. Even Pentax's on brochures and web site does this. What they should be saying is that it has the same field of view as a 450mm lens. I don't know if this is from laziness or something got lost in translation. However, that is actually false advertising/marketing.

Here is a direct quote from the Pentax page describing the DA* 300mm:

The focal length is equivalent to 450mm in the 35mm format.

You're wrong on two separate points:

1) SDM is the internal motor and has nothing to do with weather sealing as such. Of course all DA* which are w.s. also have SDM but this is another thing.
2) In fact not only all DA* but even DA17-70 have gaskets at mount. Maybe if you'll be fortunate enough to get one DA* on a sale someday you'll discover this for yourself.

On a separate note I don't get the obsession some folks (including you) have with "overpriced items" *read DA* 60-250*. IMHO noone is forcing you to buy one if you feel it's not worth it. And if you want to see how much the gear costs here - read E.U. (Pentax vs Canon) you can watch and hopefully gain some knowledge from here:

Canon 70-200 mm EF 1:4L IS USM - Foto Erhardt - 1105 Euro
Canon 70-200 mm EF 1:2.8L IS USM - Foto Erhardt - 1798 Euro
Pentax 60-250 mm / 4.0 EF (IF) DA* SDM - Foto Erhardt - 1050 Euro

feel free to look for better Canon prices in Europe, I wish you luck!

I hope you get my point, the world is a bit larger than your backyard.

I paid $1.34 a gallon for gas last week to fill up my car & thought I paid too much

And I was wondering why I don't buy brand new gear outside of USA. thanks for reminding me.

;^)

How about Tokina 50-135mm for $599 available both for C and N?

In terms of zoom, so far Pentax is a little behind C/N in the current lineup, no doubt. I have the 50-135mm and it is a great lens, but had used a 70-200mm VR on a D300 recently, I don't think the Pentax set can beat that in terms of IQ and speed. However to be fair, it all comes down to the price. For around $1400, the K20d+50-135mm is probably the best quality you can get for that price. You can't even buy 70-200mm 2.8 in C or N with $1400...

Well, the Canon lens has been around for a long time. On the other hand the pentax lens is newly announced and isn't even available yet. Eventually the pentax price will come down.

enjoy your ride. over here, gas prices are around $1.15 per liter - that's $4.36 per gallon, and we consider that as extremely cheap, haven't been that cheap in almost 5 years. and then consider that average joe gets $760 per month...

Yes, we already know how supremely rich you are, being able to add to your gear like crazy. The rest of us don't earn as much.

But in all fairness, $1499 is quite a sum of money to pay for that 60-250. Here's hoping street prices would be fairer for that one.
