As I do a fair amount of wildlife photography, availability of long glass is of interest to me. Currently there is not that much to choose from. Due to availability and the latest price increase the FA*600/4 is not a viable option any longer.

I have read the "Super telephoto"-text in the roadmap to mean something beyond 300mm/f4, both in terms of focal length and speed. Of course I may be dreaming...
It is taking time once again, and I am being tempted by the Sigma 500/4,5. Anyway, I want to see Pentax´s next generation of DSLRs introduced before making any decissions.

I think the price increase it's not due until early next month!

Right. List price going from around $10,000 to about $15,000 USD based on current currency conversion, that decision could have only come from their Business Prevention Department given the Canon 600/4 can be had for $7200 from B&H; seemingly the only one department thriving within Pentax.

Now, really if you convert those list prices you'll got some crazy numbers like 940 USD for the FA43 or over 1700USD for the FA31. So I would halve that prices and suddently 7500-8000 USD for a FA* 600/4 doesn't sound that bad (for those who need/afford it).

price increase happened 3 days after it was leaked

I was considering buying 50mm 1.2 SMC-A from a dealer in Japan. Three days after the price rise was leaked the dealer raised their price about $100. Now Nikon 55mm 1.2 AiS is about $100 less including delivery. Thats the gamble, thinking a feb 2009 date for increase means february 2009. I've seen same thing with other brands. Once you see a credible price rise leak you better buy buy buy or say Good Bye to price you remembered seeing.

No biggie, Pentax 50mm 1.2 SMC-A is not held in high regard so it was an impulse buy for me. Its illogical it that isn't a great lens but without one inhand I'll never know.

Now find me a reseller that will order a extremly low volume special order only item and not charge list price. I'm not saying I'm buying it. I'm saying I've never seen a retailer discount a special-order item of this like, unless you are a friend of, or have a special business relationship with, the person doing the ordering.

If I were you I'd just ask for a quote several big European Pentax dealers - both in your region and in Germany (Tekade, Foto-Erhardt). You have nothing to lose I guess. You also must add the VAT to the price in the USA they don't have this AFAIK.

You sound like is a long waiting list for this particular lens and while I don't know the actual situation I really don't think a dealer will pass an easy 1K Euro only because it hopes to make 4K Euro. It's all about demand and offer I think.

Good luck. I'll be happy to be proven wrong if I see it sell in the $7K - $8K USD range presently or after Feb. I would think $9K - $10K will become the street price with that near 50% List increase. If so, "Business Prevention" [as opposed to what it should be, "business retention"] if compared to the competition...and that is my point.

Fascinating. I wasn't aware of this mirror lens, and I imagine there weren't too many made.
1000/f5.6 for medium format? Can't imagine there were lots, either.

It does, I think, serve as an example that a good long lens doesn't have to be a refractor design. And Pentax, if they want to be an affordable outdoorsy -- wildlife and sport -- kinda brand, do need to think outside the box.

I figure either Hoya is going to release its very first internal-diffraction glass in a Pentax long lens, or there's going to be a non-refractor design, but this is probably just blind optimism.

They actually had a 2000mm f13.5 in the M series that was made up until 2004. M 2000/13.5 Reflex

They also had the 1000mm f11 reflex in the K series up until 2004 K 1000/11 Reflex

But here was the Holy Grail Pentax long glass produced until 2000 : A* 1200/8 ED [IF]

Where on that map is 400mm? It stops at 300mm AND has dotted lines through 300. I would interpret the Super Tele as either a not DA* 300 or a slower 300 before I could get anything longer out of that chart. However, just because it isn't on the chart doesn't mean the Pentax engineers aren't working on some long glass.

It could be DA* 300/2.8 with matched 1.7x or 2x TC (as 1.4x is on the roadmap already)
Hopefully they'll say something about that glass before we all buy telephotos from Sigma...

A DA* 300 f2.8 would make sense. I could live with a 600mm f5.6.

HAD ? Its still available for $8,800

There's still some Pentax 2000mm mirrors in inventory for sale & just $8,800 plus delivery & No Returns:

Pentax | Super Telephoto SMCP Reflex 2000mm f/13.5 | 24980 | B&H

Mirrors are not a replacement for real variable aperture supertelephoto glass. I test drove one of those 400-600mm mirror zoom SMC a couple years ago. ON a Bright Sunny day it was SO DARK & close focus was like 50+ feet out. Innovative design for sure.

I've owned 4 mirror lenses, still own two, what I considered the best of the 4. You got to love the doughnut bokeh circles on anything shiny in background as thats what you get with them.

Hmmmm Doughnuts!!!

Occasionally I see Pentax 1000mm and 2000mm mirrors on ebay USA sold out of Israel. They are Surplus IDF, Israel Defence Force equiptment always engraved and at most they sell for $1,000 complete with case and filters.

Now on that 1200mm f8 SMC, I've seen one seller ocassionally offer up one a few times and no sale at $4,500. I don't recall his ebay id either. Aps-c sensor and 1200mm SMC-A doesn't appeal to me but keep searching. They do exist. Oh and $4,500 I think is too much money for an f8 lens and obviously everyone else who seen it and not bought it at ebay USA must feel same way too.

I'll agree 1200 A* is the rarest of the bunch
