Yeah I really like the looks of this one too. I've been looking to upgrade my 50mm and this would work nicely. However, I've spent a bit of money lately on lenses and will probably wait a bit before I dump another 800 bucks...

im affraid of the pricing it will get in sweden, they just increased all lens prices by 40% here due to the yen!!

50-135 went from 1000$ to 1500$ so the 55 could end up as high as 1000$

anybody get this yet? I've seen it is available at Amazon for the last couple days... they show 5 in stock @ 800 bones. A bit too much for me at the moment... need a little time for my credit cards to cool after the live.com binge

Even if it would be available right now, I would wait for the price to drop. It was the same when the DA* 16-50 / 50-135 came out, who needs these early adopter prices? There are plenty of other 50mm lenses, like the Nokton.

I can't imagine with this lens will be able to do that the FA50/1.4 can't. (besides SDM, which I can live without on this lens.)

Anyone caught a whiff of what the retail will be on this? $600-800?

Jason

I've just been to SRS's website (SRS Microsystems ? Pentax, Nikon and Olympus Digital Cameras, Camera Accessories and Lenses) and there advertising a Pentax Open Day on the 28 Feburary 2009. It saya that you'll be able to get hands on with the 55, 60-250 and the ring flash. Pentax pro's will also be 'on hand to discuss'.

Looks like there actually coming for PMA.

No problem, Fearview!

In fact I hope for the new DA*55 compared to the FA50 to have besides the new features (w.s. and SDM) improvements in:

- (much) better contrast under f2;
- enhanced resolution on both center and borders under f2.8;
- less CA in general (and especially in bokeh);
- better manual focusing due to quick shift, a much bigger focus ring and a more dampen mechanism;
- better AF performance (my FA50 was a pretty poor performer in that area) although Pentax cameras seems to have problems AF-ing with fast lenses;
- as a personal preference I hope for a more DA*/DA Limited kind of rendering (read "cooler"). I didn't liked too much the warm tint of the FA50 but ymmv.

hmm, after reading all that, I think I must have a damn good copy of an FA50/1.4.

but then again, I am never one to rush out and get something I can live without, just because it's new.
