Ned gets a new camera

This time it's a really cool looking Pentax PZ-1. One of the transparent body cameras used by marketing.

NED BUNNELL: "See-thru" Pentax PZ-1

BTW his Leica D-LUX 4 takes some pretty sharp close-ups

Check the EXIF data, that's exactly what he did.
Message to Ned, with people like you in their employ, Pentax doesn't need competitors.
What a freaking idiot.

What do you propose he use? It's not like Pentax has anything positioned to even remotely compete in that market segment - they focus on SLRs and low-end P&S. In fact his choice seems to be quite a common choice with the Pentax user base - it seems like a lot of Pentax SLR owners use a Panasonic LX-series camera as their point and shoot.

Whether by choice or not, Pentax does not participate in that market segment (high-end P&S). Often this is an intentional choice, especially for a company with limited resources.

He is taking close-ups of a camera on a table.

Maybe he should have used any Pentax DSLR plus a Pentax macro lens?

Maybe a K20D with the Limited DA 35 macro?

I don't see why a Leica is needed to take those shots.

Na, it's a gift from someone who appreciates him. Probably corporates way of thanking him for the fact that his refreshing transparency actually got Pentax noticed positively on a handful of review blogs for a change.

I don't care for the camera, but I wouldn't mind having that F series zoom. it looks bitchin' in clear plastic.

Really? Wonder why he's still using that Leica in the employment of Pentax in spite of such angst and name calling. He referred to it as a lure on the pond. If that lure was catching nothing but flack do you suppose he would still be using it?

He said it was "too much trouble" to get the K20d and macro lens out. He could have at least gave it a go with the DA* 55mm f1.4 to motivate himself.

Pentax president raves about Leica D-Lux 4 | Crave - CNET
Most imaging companies' employees probably wouldn't be caught dead using their competitors' products, but it seems Ned Bunnell, president of Pentax Imaging (USA), thinks otherwise.
On his personal blog, he wrote about how impressed he was with the Leica D-Lux 4 (equivalent to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3), and gave a short, positive review of this shooter. Bunnell commented that the "lens is sharp and distortion seems to be very well controlled."
His affection for a competitor's shooter garnered some pretty interesting comments from readers. Some people are baffled as to why the president of Pentax would be raving about Leica's products when he should be more focused on his company's direction. However, some Netizens think Bunnell is doing an excellent job by looking at the current market and trying to improve on it with future Pentax cameras.
Bunnell posted a separate entry to soothe angry Pentax loyalists who thought he was selling out by publicly announcing his liking for the D-Lux 4. Bunnell stated that his blog is his personal photographic journal, but he has to balance it with his position in Pentax as well. His point of view about the Leica was from a photographer's standpoint, which he thinks is what shutterbugs will want to know. Surely it would appear biased if he slammed every other camera that wasn't a Pentax.
Kudos to Bunnell for being honest. Hopefully, he can integrate some of the useful features found on the D-Lux 4/LX3 in future Pentax cameras.

silence is golden Ned...
Still have mixed emotions on this one. Gut still tells me it's wrong though. Maybe it's because I work in retail.
