not sure how good Pentax DA*55 will be, but according to quite a few users on one of the Nikon forums, Sigma 50MM F1.4 EX DG HSM is better in there opinion than new Nikon 50 mm G lens. I was very surprised to here that.

the new G seems to be very underwhelming.

Looks tempting especially for a portrait length lens on digital but I don't think it's worth buying when I already have a Nokton...the focusing with that lens is already dead silent

Foremost you have to realize that the FA31's 900$ in the street price, whereas the DA55's 800$ is not. Just to give an example: In Germany you can get the FA for about 840 (link) and you can order the DA*55 for about 440 (link). Now consider that the introduction price is usually higher than the final price some months after introduction. And remember that Sigma has just release their EX50/1.4 for K-mount at about 380, with HSM and the best wide-open performance on the market.

You won't see Pentax asking 800$ for the DA*55, so calm down.
P
Pareto...Thank you for your concern, but I don't need to calm down. I don't have an issue with the DA*55 lens being $800 (if that will be the actual price).

My issue is with people whining about the price, when in turn they own the FA31. On the fore-front the FA35 and the FA31 are not so different, much like the FA50 and the DA*55. People who own the FA31 state that it is expensive, but the magic it produces is worth it...I'm expecting the same with the DA*55.

That is all.

Why surprised? Nikon users usually don't admit easily that third party lenses are better than there Nikon counterparts.

You'd think so, but you'd be wrong.

Over in the US, Canada and Hong Kong, Expensive Honda = Accura

For the rest of the world, Expensive Honda = Honda.

Having said that, I would love an AF 35mm f/1.8 in Pentax mount. I'd buy one for sure.

Street prices in Germany (w/o VAT, converted to USD), of the two are:
- Sigma 50: $411
- Pentax 55: $475
both are affordable, available next week and tempting offers Time for a shoot out...
My main interest will be which one focusses more accurately. At a DoF this shallow, precise focus is everything...

Typical Pentax color vs typical Sigma color. Plus you get weather proofing. I think its a no-brainer.

The Sigma is a FF lens though...and spending this kind of money on a lens I think I'd like to make sure its future proof. But what do I know, I prefer the FA 43mm over both of them. Would be nice if the 43mm had SDM and weather proofing, but I can let it slide since I prefer a slightly wider FOV and the compactness of the 43mm.

The 55 is a FF lens too !
I would compare the AF speed of both, because there can be huge differences...
for example the Sigma 180mm is very slow on a D3...

I think ogl has posted in another thread that someone tried out the DA* 55 on FF already, and it works well (at least to my eyes). At least, I didn't see vignetting, though I'm not too sure about corner sharpness (never was concerned about it mostly, really).

Here's the link to the thread.

after a certain focal length and aperture size, coveing a full frame (or larger) image circle is simply a happy benefit rather than original intention.

That does look perfectly fine on 24x36. I wish they would have made it a standard 50mm now instead of 55mm since it can do both. Even if Pentax doesn't plan on making a FF DSLR they really need to clarify which lenses work and which ones don't for the benefit of film users if no other reason. Digging through forum threads isn't exactly the way most people like to find their info.
