23*23 mm - useless idea.

There are some problems for manufacturer.

1. not all DA lenses can cover such sensor.

How to solve such problem?
2. What is the sense of 23.5*23.5 mm and 22 MP if we crop in any convertor for printing
to the same APS-C 14.6 MP 3:2.
3. The additional 7 Mp costs money, but 90% of users won't use square sensor.
4. Bigger sensor = more expensive camera.
5. Who print 300*300 mm? How many time per year?
6. There are no square sensors.
7. There are 4:3 / 3:2 / 16:9 / 6:6 / 5:4 / 7:6 / 6:5 / 7:5 / 3:4 format in E30

Mmm sure but can't be 28mm only since SR moves quite a bit. I'd say 30mm at least !

Of course it would render SR mostly useless but the a900 does exactly that: useless SR.
Now, is it a good idea, well... each has arguments.

If the camera has the ability to adjust for DA lens that is a bonus. Plus you can use FA lens, A lenses and future lenses. Its the Pentax "Legacy" concept.

jeffkrol, 300mm, not 30mm...

But ignore my proposal. Because, what I forgot to mention...

This afternonn, while visiting my favorite photo retail store, I accidentally saw the store manager chatting with a Pentax spokesperson showcasing the upcoming K3D: And what I saw really knocked me off! A stripe-shaped sensor (about 40mm long) in so fast rotation that it appeared circular to the naked eye. As an added benefit, it will never collect dust on the sensor.

So, the square sensor speculation only was a rough approximation of the real thing! Just hope they can reduce the noise a bit before the K3D goes final...

Isn't there a risk of the camera becoming air-borne with such a rotating sensor/wing/blade? Then again, it would be lighter to carry!

Only if you shoot with your lens off.

But now I understand why Pentax has put a new accessory on their Japanese web site: A blender / food processor with a K-mount bayonet where the knives ought to be. So, they must be serious about it!

Maybe simply because the vast majority of formats are rectangle ? Consequence is the pictures taken are only rectangles.

Pentax (or Samsung) will offer FF camera (21 MP) next year. No any strange format.
