Rumour: K3D, 22 Mp, square sensor

I am a bit surprised that this rumour is not being discussed here (yet), or at least I couldn't find the discussion:

22MP DFX body: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Any further rumblings, or is this just an invented story?

Thanks, I spotted the other comments, but I find weird they were posted in that very old thread. Maybe those should be transferred to another thread, since when I saw the date of the initial post, I thought it was old news.

I've always enjoyed the hassy's square format. It's quite liberating to be able to just focus on composition w/o having to decide horizontal or vertical.

I think this would be a great "gimmick" - being able to use the same DA lenses and achieving higher pixel count w/o actually going full frame.

The square format does have it's constraints, considering most, if not all media is not square format.

It is old 'news', these were speculations before the launch of K20. I would love a sqare sensor though, so I try to believe them anyway :-)

This would be a great camera. I didnt buy a k20d because I thought it was not enough of an improvement over my k10d. Dont get me wrong, I think the k20d sensor is great. If this rumor is true, I will be the first one in line waiting to slap some cash down. This would be a total break from the canikon/sonlympus path.

I read through the whole dpreview thread and as credible as it sounds, it's just a good rumor.

It is not my preference but it would set Pentax apart form the field. It would take a little more upgrading than just this sensor to get me to buy but I'm certainly interested.

Its BS, just like 1.3 crop rumours.

For one thing it would be narrower and deeper (if it was intended to fit in the same APSC image circle) so your wide angle lenses would not be so wide any more (it would be closer to 1.7X crop).

For another, I really dont fancy cropping every image I make when they already fit near perfectly on A4 and A3 sized paper. Rather than crop a square image to 3:2, I would be actually be easier to crop a 3:2 image to square.

Then you have all the folks who want 16:9 format!

The only reason it was used on large format cameras is that most of them could not be used in portrait mode because they were too blinking heavy.

First K3*D rumor that's technologically feasible

I've been having some great fun over the past year or so perusing the "rumors" section. And I suppose that if I had more sense, I wouldn't be making one of my first posts in this section, but this is the first "K3D" rumor I've seen that makes some sense.

Pentax keeps all the DA lenses - this is consistent with the "roadmap". All you need is the detector & some software changes.

The up-front investment by Pentax is low (they don't need to bring out a new line of FF lenses) and are instantly differentiated from Nikon, Canon & Sony. They can bring it out in only one high-end model (like going from CCD to CMOS in the K20D), and if it doesn't sell, well, no real harm done. But the possible benefit is huge.

The rumor is probably BS, but it's possible...

To invest in new line of FF lenses - to develop and to start making are not quick and cheap.
To make square sensor with main APS-C mode is the best idea.
If it's true I like such camera.
