I agree that an "L" series would be cool... Kind of a slap to the face of the Can0n folks as well. I do think that they should stay away from LX and other similar designations, as I can imagine how much the KM body has caused confusion with those less informed.

Somewhat off topic, but I wonder if the K-m name was used specifically to let new users know that Pentax has a long history, and is not a new or an off-brand product.

New user sees K-m at store. Google's "km" and gets a bunch of film camera results. New user thinks, "hey this Pentax company has been around for a while"

As for "K7", I don't get why there would be a "7" in the model number. K1 maybe, but why "7"?

Since mountains were brought up, why not the Pentax K-j? Short for Kilimanjaro

Or bigger laws of physics. It can be as prosaic as thinking I left a particular step ring (or worse, particular film) in a certain place, or actually for half a second thinking I'd better go to the digital Rolleicord with the shiftable front standard.

If they are tired of the K names they wont name it LX something. LX = 60 (L=50 and X=10) for the 60-years anniversary in 1979 (though it was not sold until 1980). There were never a LX-2 or LX-II or even a LX-A (when the A contacts came just three years after the LX), so why should they do that now?

But Pentax has always been anniversary freaks who liked to release special versions of cameras when they had any sort of thing to celebrate...

Let me present the new high end model:

Pentax XC

XC for eXCellent
XC = 90 (X = -10 and C = 100) for Pentax 90-years anniversary

A think it would be a pitty if they didn't use this name since it has a nice double meaning.

The LX was released right in the middle of the M-serie so they could very well do the same, stick in a XC and still continue the K**D serie.

It is fun to speculate!

Naming it after an obsolete processor line (think AMD as what someone earlier mentioned) makes no sense. I don't see there is anything wrong with K30 and so on. At least 6 generations to go before they need to move on. If you take reference from the K-m...even more alphabet left in the series....
Of course, they could do worse like following the windows way...K2009, K2010 and if there is a mid year model...K2009.5 ?

Not really, K7 isn't a CPU name, it was the internal codename of Athlon CPU.

X70 is the Cross-over 70. Does that mean there may actually BE hope of a K7D, or think that's an example of someone hearing the "70" as "7D"?
