A couple more hours? That's cool.
I thought they would not annouce this new baby until tomorrow morning Tokyo time.
Well, I'm just guessing there'd be a deluge in announcements from manufacturers come March 2 in the US, in time for PMA. I'm thinking that'd be where announcements will be coming from for now, instead of Tokyo or elsewhere.

Well at least this might give us a good idea of what it will cost:

Pentax | X70 SUPER ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA | 17491 | B&H Photo Video

…and there may well be none, but it doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist.

Not to put too fine a point on it, if such a camera doesn't make sense, why do Nikon and Canon have similar ones? It may not make sense to a bunch of people who have been using film and digital SLRs for years, because we know what we want from a camera (well, most of us, hopefully). As has been pointed out many times in this forum, we're the minority in the marketplace.

One would hope that the well-paid marketing types in Pentax/Hoya have done enough research to know whether or not it makes sense from a strategic as well as a sales perspective.

Then why do Canon, Panasonic, Nikon, Olympus, Kodak, Fujifilm, Sony have one?

It's still better than a regular P&S.

It is okay if you treat it as an advanced P&S. And it might be handy if the features and specs are strong enough, e.g. 1080 hd video in H.264 format and with standard hdmi output etc.

i would say that that statement right there is the reason that this new pentax makes no sense... why try compete, from behind, in a segment that already has 7 competitors...

but i guess this shows Pentax stratergy........ they gonna focus on the new photographers with p&s and entry level DSLR's only....

i suppose they will wait for this new lot of people they hook into the system to graduate first before going with a FF.. leaving those of us who are ready to graduate with no option but to cross over.....

oh well Pentax - its been fun.. I am sure my wife will like my K10d...

now.... where are those Canon forums again..??

Wishful thinking. Neither of Nikon's rebadged Olympus super zooms have direct zoom buttons on the back either (I assume they use the dial or something)
The glorious Fuji s6500 had damped mechanical zoom ring, and wired focus ring.

Now i can see where 18-250 has gone?

Yes, since we now have a picture of the back of and the price of a new Pentax camera, we can conclude that it will be no different from other offerings in the same category, AND we also know that this represents the direction of Pentax from now on.

I really hope you doomsayers will be proven utterly wrong tomorrow.
