Yes, if you can judge photogeekery by the sheer numbers of camera/electronics stores/buildings that can coexist within a 4 block radius in *multiple* areas in the same city, then they've got us beat hands down (I'm thinking Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Akihabara, Yotsuya for starters...)

It's a bit of a stereotype, but Japan really outclasses us for sheer photogeekery.

So true, this could be the start of something big (literally too )!

As you're from Norway, I guess you've noticed that Fovi has a lot of 645 lenses (demo and brand new) at very low prices right now? (e.g. a demo FA* 300mm for 19995 - that's almost 40% less than the Yodobashi camera price) Could be a good investment if this means the 645 system is returning

(Me, I'm just an amateur who is happy enough dreaming of a DA35 and DA15 right now)

Well, there's been talk that Pentax needs a 'prestige model.' Here we are. There's something.

Hasselblad and Mamiya both have "645" digital bodies available here in the US for well under $20K.

These are all IN-STOCK, not special order, and available in the US:
Hasselblad H2F Digital Body - $3,250
Mamiya 645ZDb 645AFD III with 80mm Lens, 22 MP Digital Back - $10,999 and free shipping
Mamiya DL28 645AFD III, Sekor 80mm f/2.8D Lens, 28MP Leaf Aptus-II Digital Back - $14,999
Hasselblad H3D-31II, 31 MP, 80mm f/2.8 HC AF Lens - $17,995 and free shipping

It doesn't seem to fit "Pentax" for them to bust out on the 645 digital scene priced above the competition. And I don't buy the "won't be sold in the US" schtick either. If Pentax really does launch a "645D" it may not hit the Jersey shore immediately but it'll get there sooner than later.

It will not be marketed in the United States because Pentax predicted it would only sell 200 units there
What is the prediction for Japan (>1000?) and Europe (<10?)? For comparison: How many units of a FF-DSLR would sell in the corresponding markets?

You're right, I should have double-checked that one before linking it. I didn't think that price looked legit for digital. Thanks for the editor's stroke.

all those digital medium format cameras aren't truly full frame - their sensors are smaller than 5642 mm (645), just like our aps-c sensors.
maybe 645D will have 5642mm sensor, thus justifying it's price...

Well, keep in mind that Leaf backs are aftermarket,
and some of these other systems have been out for a while: in fact there were digital backs for Hassie and Mamiya pretty much all along, ...it's very hard for a system which never had interchangeable backs (thus meaning many types of pros just weren't with Pentax to begin with) to break into that market, never mind while being years behind.

Basically all of the people that *need* MF digital didn't wait around for Pentax, ...this new model has to get itself a rep, and it's brand new. Other MF digital systems... even just the backs, started out more expensive than that. Frankly, I'm surprised to see the prices on the Mamiyas and Hassies so 'low.' Last time I bothered to notice, they were somewhat more Mercedes-like.

Isn't the US owned by the chinese and the arabs?
An "economic superpower" don't have a 10 trillion deficit.

645D are great for business(if it's any good?). Most people can't afford a Nikon D3X or a Canon 1D mark ??(whatever), but they look at what the pro's are using. They see that Pro-photog's are using CaNikon and they buy just that.

I just hope they release a 645D with the same features as their dSLR's. Dust and weathersealed body's and lenses for landscape photog's. Good enough quality for studio photog's who want's to buy Hasselblad or Mamiya.
The price? Not more than $10-15K with a 80mm *prime incl. I hope

Here's hoping that even if the 645 lenses go up in price a bit, the bodies come down to Zenit-like prices

If I had the money (maybe sometime I will) and that my passion is Landscapes and portraits, the 645D would be perfect.
It would consider it over the Mamiya, Hasselblad and Leaf bodies anytime, think of the optics I could get...... :-)
