Not bad. I prefer a more optimistic approach;

"The firm does not want to lose focus on the entry-level or enthusiast market." I think that's wise and Pentax's reputation for value positions it well in the economic down turn. Sure, a K30 (or whatever) would be nice if I could afford it but I'm fine with the K20D for now. Let's face it, enthusiasts and pros alike are going to be pinching pennies for the next year or two.

Yes we can wait till the summer for the camera, but why wait for the announcement?

in the article they make mention of :

entry level
ethusiast level
mid range model..

so what grade are they specifically referring to with mention of a new release in the "enthusist level"..??

i would venture to say that Pentax would be seriously underestimating themselves if they are referring to the k20D as an 'enthusiast level' camera.. surely its pegged a lot higher than that?? seems a tad understated??

'serious amateur' maybe?

or does any one know what the exact specific 'grades' are that are used internally by pentax??

There will be no K30, said this Hoya manager.

entry level = Pentax K-m/K2000

mid range model = "the new" dSLR, K200D and K20D combined to one dSLR.

enthusiast level = A new model, more like Nikon D300 or better.

This way there are much more difference between the models. Both in specs. and price.
I guess the prices would be $5-600,- entry-level, $1000,- mid range and $1700-1990,- for enthusiast level.

blende8, why are you angry? You wanted to use a camera called K30, or maybe you really like the K20D ergonomics and won't settle for anything different?
No, there will be no K30D, but we'll have an alternative. Probably a smaller but very capable, rugged camera, with Pentax-like ergonomics. I must admit, I'm very curious about this... and they are some hints that Pentax is preparing for quite a big step forward

Don't you find that the Hoya japanese interview and this one are somewhat contradictory. The first one sounds like burning all the bridges and taking a totally new route with a new type of camera, whereas the AP interview refers to a more gradual growth on the current camera system.

I am very happy using my k20d at the moment. Hence I hope that when they want to make the cameras much smaller they don't sacrifice ergonomics, two dials and other buttons, which make the current model so easy and fast to use.

Ps. They have promised an model more advanced then k20d, and a brand new camera to the summer.
I new mount will not be that heavy change. They will surely create an adapter making it posible to use k-lenses. Just the way we use 67-645 and M42 lenses today.

Pentax have lost a lot of market becasue they had the same mount all years..
Change mount help people to invest in new lenses and not only buy old lenses from the secound hand market.

Still, I don't like it... I have an k20d today and I like it a lot.
I would like to see a k30d as well....but we have been seen a change many times in the history. I think that k20d didn't become such a succes that they belive that k30d will make it...

New line and new ideas can not be anything negative.

Leica is entusiasm-camera producer. Anyone can say that their cameras don't make good result?
There are a lot of PROs using leica. So pentax continue heading that line is not a bad idea.

Come on, people... why are you insisting on that silly new mount idea?
Nobody from Hoya/Pentax said anything even remotely related with a new mount! A new concept means small, rugged cameras designed for outdoor photography; yes, DSLRs and yes, with a K-mount. They are not willing to lose the current customers by such changes.
Please, let's not talk about this for how many months are left until the new camera announcement.
