Hoya to cut digital camera staff

Hi Guys
CNBC Aisa just announced that Hoya is cutting back on the Digital Camera division staff big time. What does that mean for the future. I just got my k20d today?

This seems like a fashion trend across industries.

The article didn't mention anything about the manufacturing jobs, just some white collar positions. It looks like they are getting rid of the deadwood.

Pentax is to drop most (all?) of the in-house P&S development. They will outsource this segment hereafter. Hence, a smalled developing team is needed. Those that remain will concentrate on DSLR's.

Actually they said "but the 2,000-member overseas production workforce will not be affected."
since most of the losses seem to be in sales maybe they will just switch to multilevel marketing

just some other "stuff".

And what, your K20D will suddenly not work for you?

By the way, welcome, to a fellow Bay area Pentaxian!

I don't care. Pentax never had good marketing - to cut marketing and
"production management and development" division - I don't see any problem at all

How many R&D people? What kind of R&D? Will they be forced to retire, or just re-allocated? (as in, move R&D closer to Vietnam/Philippines)
We don't know how/if this will impact the DSLR system. Which means only one thing...

Could be a consequence of a decision to source out P&S development.
Another possibility is that they plan to move development closer to foreign production.

Both options seem like clever strategic moves.

Well thank G*d for that. This low-profit market sector is so crowded already and I believe it's not where Pentax should have been concentrating in the first place.

Best regards

If they had pushed harder at it, it probably would have done better....it was a good way to associate Pentax with "weathersealed". The W60 was a popular P&S w/ kayakers and fishermen and competed w/ Olympus SW series...now Canon is on the scene w/ their own WP series so the big boys have noticed
