Norwegian prices from the store I use(prices in canadian dollars):
AF-540 flash $734CAD
DA 12-24/4 $1284CAD
DA*16-50/2.8 $1467CAD
DA*50-135/2.8 $1285CAD
DA*300/4 $2348CAD

Really, DA* 16-50mm priced higher than the DA* 50-135mm? Wow...

Locally at Broadway Camera the DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL[IF] SDM is $939.00 and the DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM is $1699 .... A Parody and Tragedy by Pentax Canada.

Unless it is deliberate as a tax dodge or something to shut Pentax Canada operations.....

Have been sitting on the fence re the 50-135 for some time now. Finally decided to leave it to chance. Went to McBain Camera yesterday and indicated that I would buy one if they would honor the old price. If they didn't, it would officially be off the radar. They must have had one (or more) that they purchased at the old price becuase they said yes... we did the deal. Kinda glad they did.

Good for you to ask for the old pricing.

One lens that hasnt skyrocketed in price is the 70mm f2.4, It was $510 at Aden. now $590.

I did a little online comparison shopping. A little Pentax glass vs. Canon.

Not withstanding the in body SR that Pentax has, I tried to match the two kits the best I could.

Penatx
12-24 $1299
16-50 $999
50-135 $1799
60-250 $1750
Total $5847 (note pre April 1, this would total 4298)

Canon

12-24 (tokina) $699
16-35 f2.8 $1740
24-70 f2.8 $1499
70-200 f2.8 IS $2020
1.4 extender $419
Total $6377 (+530 over the Pentax kit, or +10%)

Or:

Canon

12-24 (tokina) $699
17-40 f4 $850
24-105 f4 IS $1299
70-200 f4 IS $1320
300 f4 IS $1479
Total $5647 (200 less)

Note the the Canon kit is all FF except for the 12-24 Tokina.

I think Pentax is done as a "Value Brand", and I now expect that they will need to compete a little more in the "spec vs spec" war with Canikon.

It's interesting, I wonder if anyone from Pentax is even reading this thread?

I'm not the only one that was willing to give Pentax a $1000 only last week on a DA* 50-135mm and then contemplated the DA 12-24. DID YOU HEAR THAT PENTAX? I WANTED TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY!! $1700 is now too much for the same lens, despite the Canadian 2 year warranty, knowing the SDM will probably fail and need to be replaced hoping it happens before the warranty is up. Curious as to what future pricing on SLR bodies will be.

I have a feeling that PCI won't be holding these prices for long. There are several factors that affect pricing. Supply and cost of manufacture are two, but the customer's willingness to pay is very important as well.
I have a feeling that when Pentax sees that their equipment is no longer selling, they will drop the prices to a more reasonable level.
I'm not planning on any further lens purchases because of what I see as price gouging at the distributor level, though I did my part and bought a DA55/1.4 at their ludicrously high pricing.
It's a good lens, but it isn't worth what they are asking for it, you can take my word for that.

Seems to me that some of Pentax's lenses are already starting to come down again. At Henry's the DA 70mm F/2.4 ltd. is $599.99, the 17-70mm F/4 is $749.99, and finally the DA* 50-135mm F/2.8 is $1199.99.

That's more like it! Hopefully, they'll all come down again. Time for me to save up for some DA* and FA* lenses.

Indeed, I wonder if Pentax Canada is waking up?

Broadway Camera in Vancouver shows the following;

smc P-DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited $609.99 - back to normal
smc P-DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited $$659.99 - still high, was $449.00
smc P-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited $469.99 - still high, was $299.00
smc P-FA 43mm F1.9 $899.00! - rip off, this is the biggest increase in their line-up, was $469.00
smc P-FA 50mm F1.4 $289.00 - still high though reasonable considering the optics, this used to be $199.00
smc P-DA 70mm F2.4 Limited $569.99 - back to normal
smc DA 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL[IF] SDM $1029.00 - I can't remember the original price, this seems reasonable though.
smc DA * 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM $1149.00 - was $1800-something, originally it was $929.00.

Some of these prices are a bit high still. I will compare to SRS in the UK which is a very competitive seller. I do not know if the store you quoted from is a similar player in Canada. I will simplify lens names and round off prices for ease of comparison.

DA 21mm $610 :: $622
DA 35mm $660 :: $497
DA 40mm $470 :: $426
FA 43mm $900 :: $657
FA 50mm $290 :: $276
DA 70mm $570 :: $568
DA* 16-50mm $1030 :: $846
DA* 50-135mm $1150 :: $942

Of course tax is extra on Canadian retail prices. But then income is greater relative to the cost of living in Canada. It's never possible to compare exactly.

But the DA35 and FA43 are still looking expensive.
