URGENTTTT (not really but its pretty sad)

Camera Labs :: View topic - Danger alert: Pentax may cut workforce in half!

This thread explains it all.
Solution: Lets start buying genuine Pentax products! (cut off third-party and used lenses unless you have to)

Not again.
In Japan only, production is unaffected. It's a cost cutting measure and nothing else.
Btw, my purchase plans are unaffected by such news. And I'm planning for pretty expensive stuff.

I think Pentax is just about the last company to go through this. From what I've read elsewhere, they are outsourcing their compact camera R&D and manufacturing to third party manufacturers and eliminating the entire division.
They are keeping their SLR and lens divisions intact. With luck, the compact manufacturing lines can be converted over to SLR camera and lens assembly.
Nikon did it years ago, I think even before digital cameras hit the market.

Nikon's P&S cams aren't designed and built by Nikon???
I'm surprised they're so bleeding edge...

Sanyo builds them for Nikon if I recall correctly.

Does that include their hybrids that have the Nikkor lenses?

I spoke about this fact in a post some weeks ago.
Nobody thought it maked a sense. Well here we are.

People buy sigma and tamron lenses and then complain why pentax doesn't market new lenses....why? Easy, becasue we don't buy them.

No need to be rude to the guy.

Having competition with similar lenses didn't stop neither Canon nor Nikon from cranking out their own 70-200/2.8 glass. Why? Because they can make money off them. Pentax currently sees $0 in revenue in that focal length range.

Well, Canon/Nikon both have 50mm f/1.8 lenses that are $100 or less. That's where a 50/1.7 could fit in from Pentax' side -- a really cheap decently fast (2/3 stop slower than the 1.4) prime. The Canon 50/1.4 has USM focusing and has blistering focus speed so it's not apples to apples there.

I think Ben makes a good point: there are some real gaps where Pentax could offer up some glass, even if they're just rebadged lenses -- at least they'd have the name on them and Pentax could score a few bucks selling them, as well as offer a larger lens lineup to attract potential new buyers.

Why is it that some people get so worked up when somebody implies that there's room for improvement? Clearly there's some demand and wishes for gear that doesn't exist and features that could be improved -- why not pay attention to that rather than acting like everything's perfect?

What is so sad about cutting the workforce? The only thing that is sad, is that alot people are loosing their jobs. Frakk Pentax and frakk Hoya!

I think OP should read local news and be more concern about what's happening in his own country.

Canon cut 1200 jobs, this was reported in Dec. 2008.

Kodak cuts 4500 jobs!

Use google!!!

Quite often, manufacturers will put the same lens into several camera brands, each one with the manufacturers name on it.
My first digital camera was a Canon G1. The lens in it was identical to a lens used in a Sony (and called a Vario Sonnar or some such) and it was used in another brand, I don't recall which, and called something else.
The new Pentax X70 is the same camera as one of the Nikon Coolpic cameras and one of the new Kodak cameras as well. They change the lens bezel and call it a Pentax lens for one brand, a Nikon lens for another, and whatever Kodak wants to call it for the Kodak.

And a quick check for that (for non-DSLr products) is the presence or not lf SMC on the lens.
No SMC, no Pentax lens.
