Good to hear you'll be first to put $1700 up to buy one

You sound confident the 60-250 will be a winner then, inspite of the many people with hands on experiences that were disappointing at numerous tradeshows.

I look foward to hearing of your hands on with this zoom. We're just 7 days away from you being interesting and buying a sample of it. Good for you! One week and $1700 and you'll be first person on these forums to buy one and tell us how fast it focuses and how sharp it is.

Other than the flat front prism camera theres absolutely nothing new in this forum section. Hundreds of posts speculating on what pentax will do with no basis in reality. I really believed all the full frame factoids and predictions here last year. What a waste of time when pentax launched instead the Km/K2000. Now they make new cameras by making new color choices. Is that Being Interesting? And we're all suppose to fawn over each and every stripped down camera they make cause they give us colors too. Oh look, a green one. Its just like the color of your smiley face. I bet you want one too huh, with those two plastic mount lenses?

I handled the 60-250 SDM and it Sucked. Not a rumor, just a fact.

April 24th: Just 7 days this overdue to market 60-250SDM concept will just be another memory of how Pentax Roadmap really works.

Three new Pentax DA star lenses: Digital Photography Review

I am certain you'll just love your 60-250 SDM, just as I am certain $1700 is insane money for such a lens, assuming is great. If its a dog then that will be the topic for many new buyers to toss about. I hope your 60-250SDM gives you great joy. With all the extra time it took for Pentax to bring it to market it should be perfect.

You could add the AT-X Tokina to your list of discontinued pentax mount lenses. They made an autofocus version too. I used to want one, till I added Canon dslr & 70-200mm 2.8 IS to my bag. Hands down the 70-200mm 2.8 IS Canon is the very best lens I've owned covering this zoom range. They say the f4 canon pair betters the 2.8, but I choose the bigger & faster one. I can't imagine how the f4 canon pair could better my f2.8 IS but thats what they say on the internets. I opted for f2.8 and both teleconverters. f2.8 works exceptionally well with both TC's separately or stack'um for manual focus only captures as above f5.6 you loose af function.
better?
I'm a little surprised you like that 70-200/2.8 so much. Mine is super sharp but otherwise entirely unspectacular. With the 1.4xII teleconverter it needs to be stopped down 1 full stop to achieve acceptable sharpness. I much prefer my Pentax 50-135 when I am shooting action that is suitable to the Pentax AF traits.

oh yah - and this store in Taiwan appears to have 6 60-250's in stock http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-PENTAX-SMC-PENTAX-DA-60-250mm-F4-ED-IF-SDM-LENS_W0QQ...QQcmdZViewItem

The USD equivalent is calculated without the European specific VAT of (in case of England) 15%. So it's about 695 Pounds converted to USD and should give an impression about how much Pentax charges for this lens plus the reseller margin. So when people whine about outrageous prices in US or Canada they should consider the above fact.

Quick conversion in my head tells me thats just less than $1,200. If you want one, buy it at this price.

The DA* 60-250mm F4 at £800 competes with two Pentax lenses in my mind. For £50 more you can use the DA* 300mm f4, which is the same weight and great build, slightly longer reach, but of course does not offer the versatility. But the IQ is unsurpassed. You could instead save £600 and get the DA 55-300mm F4.0-5.8 with only the penalty of a stop less at the high(er) end. It's a great lens for the money. Is weather sealing and SDM worth £600?

Mmm I suspect the optics quality might be just a tad little different?

Yes, that's about what the Sigma 100-300 f/4 goes for.

That's a pretty fair price, no question.

Sigma 100-300 f/4 now goes for around £1,150 in the UK after the winter price hike - that's a lot more than the DA*...

With the Sigma 100-300 F4 now upto £1159 from £759, £799 looks like good value in comparison. Got mine luckily a bit cheaper a few months ago 2nd hand, but now I have to decide wether I prefer that one, or this one!

Radu

As of today that lens is 1750 CAD at Aden Camera. Taxes in it's 1837.50 CAD.

So, in GBP that's 1015 GBP

I can buy alot of wine for 300 GBP.

For the price, this lens needs to be exceptional.

Spoke to a Pentax Rep

Well, I spoke with a Pentax rep regarding this lens. His info is that April 24 is when Pentax will start shipping to the retailers, so you may not see them in the stores that day. Regarding the reason for the delay, he basically said that when they brought out the K20D with the CMOS sensor, it was better than the initial design for the 60-250mm so they had to take it back to the drawing board to improve the resolution. That apparently has been solved, and the lens is on the way... We all hope. As with most people, I won't be too excited until I see one on the counter that I can play with.

As for the price increases, in the past some of the Pentax prices have been artificially low. Apparently, Hoya has brought them back to where they should have been so that Pentax can be profitable. Who knows, but that's what I have been told.

In Oz it's $2700 but I can get it in the UK for A$1600 + shipping. Why is the Oz Price $1100 more?! I'm starting to hate CR Kennedy alot.

At $1600 from UK, it seems reasonable, and I can use a relative in the UK to onforward it ( if I buy from SRS.)
