Or is is a White Balance sensor?

That would be one weak AF Assist light. Even my 2003-vintage P&S has a more bulbous bulb than the K-7. We'll know in a few hours.

What hour of the day will this thread hit 500k views? And will it hit 4000 (5000??) posts by the time the cam is unveiled?

Now taking bets

I use the on board flash as a wireless trigger!
It is a critical piece of equipment for me. I will never buy a camera without a built-in flash.
I tried that for all of a day and got fed up with needing to be in line of sight. I pluncked down a whopping $60 on Cactus V2's and couldn't be happier. Sure, they are made like crap, but for the price they serve their purpose.

White balance sensor will always have a White color window!
Nowadays, an LED light can be seriously bright; actually it can be too bright, so they probably won't use the brightest one available.

Of good grief, Engadget is comparing the K7 to the Rebel T1i and Nikon D5000.

www.engadget.com/2009/05/19/pentax-k-7-hands-on-shots-leak-out/

Pentax really needs to educate mainstream sites as to what the K7 actually is.

You only need line of sight outdoors. For indoors, it would work with reflected light. And of course, I get full wireless TTL metering, which will be lost using 3rd party RF trigger.

Been there, done that: this is really no substitute to a bigger VF, especially if you wear eyeglasses...
Agree completely. Tried a magnifier, tried a different focus screen, went back to the stock items. If the K-7 focus screen is improved for MF that will be very nice, but I do wish the magnification was 1.0x. In fact they could keep all their video malarkey if only they'd made this right.

Why would it have to be white?

Using a tiny LED would be pretty useless...anything over like 20ft away would be too far...

I'm no fan of TTL. I still enjoy controlling my light manually.

in the hands-on by Peter Fang he mentioned AF assist light was green, and that it was indeed by the trigger.

You obviously haven't played with / checked out current crops of LED flashlight lately!

It doesn't matter. It will eliminate this kind of competition with no effort...
Besides, I don't really mind if K-7 sells as much as the Rebel series - I don't think Hoya minds either

at double the price?

this is exactly the problem when you try and base sales on intangibles such as 'soul', heritage, and 'feel'. the mass majority/general public (who look for camera info at engadget) base their decisions on these kind of surface comparisons and numerical spec crunching.

that's why the K-7 needs a unique new feature for the masses to easily grasp why a Rebel is not in the same league. ironically, size-wise, a K-7 and the Rebel ARE comparable. and WR alone is not enough, otherwise the K20 and K200 would've sold a lot better than they did.

But the fact is that a APS-C VF can never be compared with a FF ones. Even with 100% coverage, 1.0x VF, it still does not come close to a FF one. So if you want FF size VF, there is no alternative but to get a FF camera.
This is not correct, actually. An APS-C 100% coverage, 1.13x viewfinder looks exactly as large as a 92% coverage, 0.8x viewfinder on a FF film camera like the PZ-1p.

You may say it isn't as bright. Again, both viewfinders have equal brightness given both use a lens with equivalent FoV and same physical aperture diameter in mm. I.e., where the APS-C camera uses a lower f-stop lens but should still be about the same weight and cost (except for wide angle lenses).

Or to be even more specific: It is the fact that FF lenses tend to be larger which make an FF viewfinder brighter. Provided the APS-C viewfinder or magnifying eyepiece bring it to 1.13x magnification.

This is interesting info falcon. More people should consider it in the FF vs. APS-C wars.
