Wouldn't we have seen a Samsung-owned patent application for a new sensor, though? I don't remember hearing about that, but I'm not too sure what the rules are for patent disclosure for multinationals any more.

.
Did we see the patent for the current 14.6mp sensor prior to when they announced the K20D? I wasn't a member back then, so this is not a hypothetical question. Was it known prior to announcement?

I don't think it'll be radically new. I think it'll be mark II of the same sensor.
Ditto...

I agree. There were no major failings with the K20D sensor and all in all it was an excellent first attempt by Samsung.

Samsung will have been working on this sensor for its NX system, and I doubt that it has been resting on its laurels, but I would hazard a guess that the raw silcon will be the same 14.6mp core as the current sensor.

I do expect some improvements but mainly in terms of the supporting parts of the chip. My knowledge of sensor design is limited so apologies if I say something stupid but I am hoping for:

- tweaking or improvment of the microlenses (gapless?)
- increasing the readout speed of the chip
- a better ADC with better signal to noise ratio (this chip has an integrated ADC doesn't it unlike the K10D which was seperate?)

New patent applications are generally published 18 months after filing, with some exceptions. And to have a patent granted, the subject matter needs to be novel and inventive (i.e., not an obvious improvement) over the prior art. If you know in advance you're not likely to meet that standard, it's likely you won't even file.

So if it's a new sensor with only incremental changes over the existing one, there might not be a patent application. And even if there is a patent application, it might still be in the pre-publication phase when it is kept confidential.

In fact, I hope this is the case. A new sensor is likely to come with a whole new set of surprises and possible flaws (the heat issue with really long exposures with the K20D's sensor, or the banding with the K10D's. Not that those are horrible, but they're areas which could be improved). A second iteration allows those flaws the be worked out one of the reasons the K100D is so nice is that its 6Mpix sensor was basically refined to perfection.

That "mic" port excites me. Does Samsung currently make any video equipment (as in mics that would plug into a port like that)?

I'm hoping for a smaller body as well; the limiteds deserve a body that better matches their smaller dimensions. Something like the K2000/K-M in size, but with a few more K20D-class features and, maybe even more. HD video, faster shutter speeds and improved images at the higher ISO end.

A trend on technical specs

My German forum starts to converge on technical specs. I don't know why, though ...

They are the same as mentioned earlier above.

EDIT...
I somehow missed that the same specs already appeared higher up in the thread. Sorry about this. Deleted my pointless info now...

These seem to be the constants:

- 15 MP APS-C
- ISO 50-6400
- viewfinder with magnification 0.95x or higher (1.1x), coverage 95% or higher (100%)
- 1080p video possibly only at 15fps?
- Contrast AF (available in video too, but at 5fps only?)
- Contrast AF uses 77 areas of contrast, called AF points in LV ...
- 77 light metering zones, probably only in LV too
- 16 light metering zones still w/o LV (probably)
- Phase AF still using 11 AF points (SAFOX VIII?)
- 1/8000 & 1/250 sync possible, but old spec possible as well.
- 10 fps 6 MP mode possible
- JPG framing function

I see a trend here but cannot claim these data are accurate.
I'm sorry, but that is so vague as to be totally useless.......

Jeff, this may turn out to be wrong in the end (I think not).
But it is not vague

Well all it says to me is updated live view w/ rudimentary video capabilities... maybe I'm just blind...
Oh and CMOS 'cropping" capabilities.
1/8000 & 1/250 sync possible, but old spec possible as well
- viewfinder with magnification 0.95x or higher (1.1x), coverage 95% or higher (100%)

..........................
Improved sensor and ADC would be real news....
or adjustable meter baseline or white balance coefficient import along w/ curves.... opps that's nikon.....
