P.s for anyone interested here's some info on the codecs avi: Audio Video Interleave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and H.264: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Note the dates they were created.

Avi - 1992

H.264 - 2003

Enough said?
You are comparing pears and apples (not pun intended). mov and avi are multimedia container file formats.

H.264 is a compression codec.

It's like saying a V8 engine is better then a Bentley...

(anyway, I wonder if any video software will be included and if lightroom will soon support at least copying in video files as part of import)

Mpeg4 is also a tough codec to edit in hd, the other reason is loss, achd and mpeg4 are known for bad compression artifacts vs other formats. Avi would consume more space but it
Also easier to process, what I hope they do is allow the camera to record until the card is full or 1 hour which ever comes first. Well maybe at least 30 min of video like the 5dII

Only time will tell but I was looking at upgrading my panny dvc30 to hd this year, maybe I won't have to in a way, my rode video mic will fit the hotshoe easy.

As others have said, you confuse a program (QT) with a media format.

MP4 / AVC aka H.264 (.mp4) is the current standard HD video format, as broadcast, as played by most current media boxes (or PS3 ), BluRay, etc. pp.

It is also providing the best image quality at a given bitrate.

That Apple pioneered to support this format in their QT software doesn't make it less valuable. To the contrary.

How many people here even have a Full HD Screen (1920x1080) at home (TV's don't count!) for example mine's 1440x900
How can anybody NOT have a 1920 screen on their desk? They only cost $139 ...

it all depends on what level of compression you use.

now someone also convince Pentax NOT to do mov files, we want avi
MOV is definitely better than AVI, however it is proprietary Apple format and lacks good support in non Mac OS X operating systems.

Matroska would be the best choice (open standard multimedia container), however most manufacturers are ignoring open/free standards and choosing proprietary closed formats...

Did you know quicktime it self can be used for cut and paste edits? it can also convert between nearly all of the video codecs? you may need quicktime pro for it to function but it works very well! it's also has an open image sequence function in which you pick the frame rate which is how I made these two videos using k10d:

YouTube - Strobes

YouTube - High Speed Photography

FYI The canon 5d mk II shoot video at:

1920 x 1080 (16:9) up to 12 mins (Quicktime 1080p H.264; 38.6 Mbits/sec)
• 640 x 480 (4:3) up to 24 mins (Quicktime 480p H.264; 17.3 Mbits/sec)
• Max file size 4 GB
• Quicktime MOV format (H.264 video, PCM sound)
• 30 fps

I don't think 38.6 Mbits/sec is going to have chunky artefacts eh?

I have suspicion that many forum members already have K-7 photos Interesting, who is going to post them first?

I've seen only one sketchy mention of flash. Still pttl. Such a disappointment. It's just such crap. I've heard enough about slivers of something light colored somewhere in the frame, or a reflection, or how concerned Pentax is about blown highlights. I recently shot my first event with a Pentax, and the flash metering is absolutely, positively subpar. I've shot events with both Canon and Sony. Both were far, far better.

Pentax, where is pttl II? This is not an extravagant request. This is meat and potatoes here.

Most record in MOV (i.e. my W10), but some (i.e. the A40) record in DIVX.

Well we don't knw if the k7 will do 38 mps video now do we? They can also skip the 640x480 and give is 720x480 full sd at 25 mps as well :d

I wonder if the rear lcd will letter box in video mode tho.
