With the K7 built over refined K20 sensor, we'll likely have useable Iso 1600-2000. Couple that with some of your fast glass, and you could have a nice package at your hands
I'm not really interested in taking pictures of star trails. They're neat but I'm much more interested in keeping the stars as points. I've tried this with my K10D and to do so, even with my 31mm 1.8 at f2 I needed to set the ISO to 1600 to get the full effect of the night sky and keep stars as points. At 1600 the image is extremely noisy. I would rather not have to use NR software.

The paint finish on the body does look like the texture of paint on my metal DA*300mm

From the earlier press kit photo, it looked like the knob on the right side of the mount would be nothing.

This new, higher resolution image may indicate that this knob does indeed carry a button...

Metal?

I'm not sure why people are so impressed with metal, thermopastic compounds have exceeded metals in almost all physical performance aspects.

Now if it was bylateral PVC that would be cool.

Or you could get a tracking mount, right?

No, because I want to include static objects such as trees or buildings in the foreground. Having stars as points is useless if you have a smudged tree in front of it. Also, a tracking mount would only be useful for astrophotography. A new camera body with features not present in my current camera body would have many uses.

It does look comfy, but I just hope its rubberized like Nikon does with the D200/300/700/3/3x. The front dial on the K10D/20D feels like a cheap plastic turd compared to Nikons.
i couldn't agree with you more. alas, this higher res pic of the K-7 effectively confirms the front dial is the same turd plastic we're used to.

surprising that for a company that prides itself on ergonomics, Pentax skimps on the dials. its these little details which the user interacts with the most that leave the lasting impression of quality.

....so is that an AF lamp or what?

votesh, if i am not mistaking, for stars, the actual physical aperture of the lens is what counts, not the relative aperture. try a long fast lens next time along your fast 31, see what you can get (it will also mean you will have to seriously readjust the way you compose/look at the scene, though)

quick example:

31/1.8
17.22222222222222222222
300/4
75.00000000000000000000
200/4
50.00000000000000000000
135/2.8
48.21428571428571428571

hope this helps a bit

New Info about Body material!

In my German forum, a dealer "in the know" made the following statement:
"After several checks and requests, it has not been revealed what material the case of the K-7 body is made from. Whether metal or plastic has not been mentioned, only that it is a different material than before."

Yes, if it is about to capture the light of a particular star.

But a longer lens will have a smaller FoV, so the average brightness of visible stars will be smaller. And avaliable shutter speed w/o a tracking mount is shorter.

Therefore, a fast short lens actually yields more impressive night sky shots ...

For you. For me tilt & swivel LCD is not important at all.

hmm, you might have a point there, but i think there might be a "sweetspot" in that case (the best compromise focal length/aperture). again, the fact that the fov changes drasdically can mean this is not even to be taken in consideration, because the man is composing shots, not just shooting for stars alone.

May I remind You that it was you proposing to play with the focal length: "try a long fast lens next time"

Well its all moot anyway as I will likely not be able to raise the funds for a 5D and lens before I leave here on June 1st, and by then the full specs for the K7 will be revealed. None-the-less, when it comes time to buy a new body sometime this summer I'm afraid I will probably look outside of the Pentax system. The K10D does what it does well, and I fear the K7 will probably not offer the improvements I'm after. I'll undoubtedly keep it and most of my Pentax glass, however since other brands do have offerings which include the capabilities I'm after which my Pentax does not, I'll probably be getting a 5D or maybe a D700.
