So if I see it right the lock button is for getting the camera in/out of the movie mode, and that's why the movie icon takes a much larger slice of the cake
Where's the lock button? Is it the black round thing in the middle? I was just thinking about a lock button the other day, it'd be great to have one to prevent accidental mode changes.

Yes, it's the black button in the middle. It works the same as the button on the shutter speed dial of the MZ-5 (to keep it in the green-colored "A" mode, otherwise you can select shutter speeds manually.)

Great! So no extra button to press to change modes. It does sound logical to avoid accidental activation of video mode as this may require the camera to start a sequence of actions that may render it less responsive for a few seconds.

For the few like me that can't shoot with the right eye (75% blindness in that eye), then adding a grip to make it larger isn't a solution. I have a *istD which appears to be about the same size. I can't use the AE-L button or EV comp button on that camera while my eye is on the VF. It's OK with that body since there are not many buttons on that back of that camera so it's workable.

From the pictures (if they are even real) we've seen this camera is not for people like me. If this is the future trend, I'll use my K10/20D's till they die and then take my Takumars over to a FF Canon. I sure hope that making them small is not the way Pentax is going.
Maybe you should consider the O-ME53 eyepiece to keep the face away from the body. Usually is reccomended for people like me with big noses, to avoid smudging LCD with the nose tip, so it could do something to reach AE-L better for you.

Anyway, cheaper than a 5D

Yeah, my first question for Pentax customer service when the K-7 comes out: does the O-ME53 still fit? Because no matter how awesome the viewfinder is on the new camera, it can always stand to be 20% awesomer.

What kind of freedom have Pentax given you?
Wait a minute. The photographer is not me.

Wait a few more days when those who really have/know the camera will start to talk. I can bet 500 posts per day minimum!

there should be a bet on how many posts the mega thread will receive before the big announcement hits. I guess 4500 posts.
We know when if finishes when the first person to post the actual official announcement in the thread arrives.

First report from photographer handling a K-7

First report of photographer handling a K-7

As anticipated by Asahiflex, here is a report from Mr. Smith (name changed by editor), a photographer handling a real K-7. I believe it is a first of its kind. Mr. Smith prefers to remain anonymous. Mr. Smith has handled a K-7 but may not have been able to actually shoot own images with it, or even to turn it on.

In the words close to those of Mr. Smith:
--

On a PC, I compared images taken with it to the K10D and the K20D. Better noise performance by far, but it seemed too buttery, like it was heavily processed. I could not tell if the sensor performs better or the processing algorithm is improved that much. I guess a little bit of both.

I saw a video which played back on a PC at 720p and it was a Pentax demo. So, it wasn't actually shot with the K-7 unit I handled. Quality was breathtaking, but again it was a Pentax demo - I expected quality like this. The video was in AVCHD - but it was processed. It was edited with music over it so no sounds of the camera were audible.

I learned that (with current firmware) the camera would not output live video feed through the HDMI port. (Editorial comment: The 5Dmk2 cannot do it either)

It was not that small in my hands (Editorial comment: the hands are a large man's hands which are used to a K10D/K20D). The difference in size is more obvious in pictures than in actual use. It seemed to me heavier than the K20D - although I learned that they're about the same weight.

I learned that it is far more waterproof, like you can drop it entirely in water with no problem.

The material of the K-7 didn't feel like metal to me.

I learned that AF works in video and that it is better than any other AF system Pentax has made so far.

If the video I saw was the real quality of the camera, then it is worth buying for this alone.

Thanks! Nice report even though most of it is just "hearsay". I hope we will get the first true hands-on reports soon.

I also cannot wait to see that 720p video.
