Sigma is releasing SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM for Pentax on May 2, 2009
Not sure why it is releasing this lens for Pentax

Because they add HSM for Pentax which previously was only screwdriven.
EDit: 10/2.8 and 4.5/2.8 fisheyes inHSM for Pentax as well.

Why "not sure"?
I've been wondering why it's taking so long...Nikon/Canon users have had theirs for about two months now...

We need someone to compare it w/ the FA*28-70

cause this is FF lens, this focal is not really meant for cropped sensors.
And Pentax, according to latest press releases, have no plans getting into FF camera production.

The lens is reviewed in this month's issue of Popular Photography. They say it's head and shoulders better than Sigma's previous 24-70. Of course for the difference in price, it should be.

It's not necessarily for FF. It's also good for portrait/studio photography if you need a zoom in that range. And it's a replacement for the FA*28-70 w/ more wide end so it'll more useful for APS-C. It has better edge performance than the Tamron 28-75 as well. It beats the Canon 24-70L lens soundly, and is almost as good as Nikon's 24-70 which is the best on the market right now, so I suspect it'd beat the FA*28-70 as well. The non-HSM model is beaten easily by the Tamron 28-75 and was optimized for landscapes.
