It is the mirror lockup. I've been insisting on this idea, but it needs not be so close to the forefinger as it is. Maybe another function helpful and understandable when you know the full camera's specifications.

Dum question, but what is this for?
So you can lock focus on an area w/ a bird and then take multiple pictures?

Wait a sec,
so the 2 sec/30sec timer on K20D doesn't do mirror lockup?

It might be a microphone for the video mode.

The timers do lock the mirror up, but I believe you can't use mirror lock up with a cable release without using the self timer, which would be the most ideal scenario.

no idea what it's for, but utilizing 2sec self timers as mirror lockup replacements is the pits... sometimes you want to time the shot (eg waves crashing) and 2sec self timers don't help in that sort of situation, so a proper mirror lockup can be a good thing!

An AF assist lamp will be a welcome feature as long as I can turn it off in the menu.

It's for getting sharper photos - one less moving part on the camera to shake when you pull the trigger, or the remote shutter, if your freaky like that

The new X70 has something like that in about the same place. I don’t know what the thing on the X70 is for either. But then the X70 can stitch to frames together so where is the button to do that?

On the X70 it's a focus assist lamp. Doesn't quite look like that on this image of the K7, but perhaps.

Hrm, I'm not so sure, it seems rather an elaborate shape for just a focus assist lamp, though one would be most welcome, I think.
