I hope there really is an option in the menu to select the different mode -> Keep the 4-way buttons unlocked when in user AF point select mode and you have to press OK to select timer/WB/flash/... and a normal operation when in auto AF point select or center AF point mode. That would be logical and would not slow down the process of selecting AF points.
Someone mentioned it's the same safety technique as the mode select dial now has. Not quite, the mode dial is a mechanical wheel that can be rotated even when the camera is turned off, for the AF point to accidentally move the camera would have to be turned on. And I turn my camera off when it's just hanging around my neck ... if it's on I'm always holding it in my hand so accidental button pressing would be hard.
