And who said that Pentax is going to use K with only numbers?
We have the K-m, remember? We can have K-a, K-b, K-c, K-d and everything down to K-z. Then we of course can have KZ-1, KA-20, KD-5 or whatever.
I think they'll probably skip the k-y however...

Most camera naming schemes don't make sense: just when it seems to be orderly, someone in marketing needs to be distracted so engineers can do their jobs.

Here is a news flash for you, it's just in from the marketing department.

All Pentax DSLRs will in the future be called only "K*".
Yes, one single name for all of them. Couldn't be easier. Just Pentax K*.
This is an evolution of the Pentax *ist D-idea.
But now only K*.

Oh, and the lenses will be called Pentax K* too. And the lens mount is, of course Pentax K*. No more K-mount, but K*-mount.
Pentax K*-mount.

Wonderful, isn't it?
Or simply *ful? Or wonder*?
* ?

It made me think of a different "special K"

People would surely get addicted to such a quality camera

As long as we don't make to to KA-KA.

I still can't get over them thinking it was a good idea to name a camera *ist. Not only is it unpronounceable, but it will confound all known search engines of our time!

Now you also understand how "smart" it was to retain the * designation in their top of the line lenses

Actually I never had a problem finding info using pentax*ist....
Google

Results 1 - 10 of about 2,990,000 for pentax *ist. (0.20 seconds)
Results 1 - 10 of about 645,000 for pentax *ist-d. (0.30 seconds)

They've changed it, now, but in earlier days, typing *ist into the Net meant *everything* ending in ist. Also, often bold face type, if you surrounded something in it, which some old salts still do out of habit.

There's the film cam KM...now the digital K-m. I could see them using M and L over again...as long as the cam harkens back to the original.

In their medium format line, they came out with 645 -> 645N -> 645NII

And the same for Pentax 67II

With 35mm film, there were : P3 -> P3N
MZ5 -> MZ5N

So if the K7 is named after a mountain range, they'll reserve that special calling, and probably go K7II, etc.

(But if K7 is unique segment. And they need another tier for FF down the road, or another one digit follower to K20, then maybe LX line, or other).

I think it should be clear by now that Pentax don't have a defined naming system. I suspect that some engineer designed a Random Pentax Name Generator years ago and that's what they're using.
