I think sveinmb wanted to tell you that capacity may not be part of the NP-400 specification. Actual implementations, of course, all tell their specific capacity. That Minolta sells another capacity than Pentax doesn't make them different specifications. Indeed, a good NP-400 clone should outperform a Pentax original.

Nevertheless, I've run across some cheap clones which were dead after a few cycles. Which isn't due to the difference between NP-400 and D-LI50, of course.
Please, what are you talking about? Capacity not part of specifications?
Have you seen what is printed on the Minolta NP-400 battery label and on a Pentax D-LI50 battery label? The voltage and amperage is clearly marked as required. Actual use have shown the Pentax battery to last a little longer than the Minolta battery consistent with the higher rated capacity. As to 3rd party batteries, some may indeed have a higher capacity than the Pentax original but I know of users who claim shorter life span and even issues like premature shutting down when doing long exposures beyond 10 sec. So it can be a hit and miss issue with some 3rd party batteries and imo false economy when powering what is essentially an all electronic device, YMMV in this area.

Hmm — extremely similar, but the Nikon batteries appear to have an open groove to the left of the three contacts, whereas the picture from Peter Fang shows what looks like a solid insert in the groove.

If it were the other way around, it'd be a sure won't-work, but as it is, maybe. (The Nikon battery says 7.4 volts instead of 7.2....)

The Nikon EN-EL3e is mechanically incompatible. Look at the edges along the long side. Or the fourth hole. But then again, it may only concern the charger ...

Maybe this.
Cropped by me from image by Peter Fang.

EDIT... beaten again
that battery states 7.2 volts. Not 7.4 volts.
the equivalent of the 6 AA 1.2 volt batteries.
But what if you use 6 1.5 volt batteries. You get 9 volts.

Yeah, I'm not going to be the one to try it, but I bet that 7.4 volts is okay in a camera designed for 7.2 volts — less than 3% variation has to be within spec.

but what can the 9 volts give us. 6 x 1.5 = 9volts with Alkaline or Lithium batteries.
POWER.

POWER.
Although: 5 × 1.5 = 7.5. Just sayin'.

Edit: I see from the specs that it definitely does use 6.

See what I mean,. I think the extra POWER will be used for the green LED light to make a lightsabre like weapon and decapitate bridzilas at weddings. !!!

Voltage does not matter that much really. What matters is the amount of power.

7.2volt lithium 1900mah = 13,68 Wh

6 * 1.2 volt eneloop 2100mah = 15.12 Wh

6 * 1.2 volt "poweful nimh" 2700 mah = 19.44 Wh

6 * 1.5 volt "theoretical alkaline" 3000mah = 27 Wh

The only problem is, alkalines tend to give a lot less mah depending on the mount of current used by the product. Typical you might only get 700mah from alkalines, and that would give only 6.3 Wh

Of course these are all very simplified calculations with no data about reduced voltage over time, internal resistance etc.
