A 17-70/4 WR would be awesome.

that should've been the kit lens. it almost perfectly covers the entire DA Limited range and would've gone nicely with the 'Limited' feel of the K-7.

a WR "limited" zoom as it were.

The filter thread has changed to 49mm, so perhaps the optical formula has changed as well.
From the pictures the front element looks similar, so I guess not. A 3mm reduction means they took 1.5mm off of the border around the front element, which on the 'old' 50-200 is quite big. The border on the new one seems different, so I guess that's where the 3mm came from. But who knows.

Sounds like a good call, and an interesting strategy — none of the other camera manufacturers work that way.
Well it just makes sense to me. I wouldnt expect someone to buy a $500 body to buy a $1500 lens or someone who buys a $2500 body, a $250 lens, it can and may happen so you make all of the lenses compatible, but if you build rugged lenses, build an into body, make an intro lens line and something in the middle.

Anyone else notice the red gasket on the lens mount? I've only handled the DA* 16-50 and can't recall any sealing there...

Imo the new look is closer to the D-FAs or the Sony Zeiss lenses. Either way it looks nice. I do like the old look but this one looks sharper, less "kit lensy" imo.
Don't those D-FA lenses have their roots in Tokina?

Edit: Case in point, compare the D-FA 100mm macro and the Tokina AT-X M100 macro lenses.

Yeah, the D-FA and the DA* are Tokina borthers, I wish that they would complete the family and make the DA*11-16mm

There are also similarities between the DA 35mm limited and the Tokina AT-X M35 Pro DX macro including the optical formula etc. It is also interesting that when this occurs there is not a Pentax mount available in the Tokina version.

Tokina doesn't make Pentax mounts, at least they haven't for quite some time now. All of their current lenses are Canikon only.

Thats part of Pentax and Tokinas non competition agreement I would imagine.
16-50mm, 50-135mm, 35mm macro, 12-24mm, 10-17mm fisheye, etc. I would hope the 11-16mm f2.8 is another lens that is shared...

My DA*16-50mm does have black gasket sealing on the lens mount.
I believe they're the same thing but the color.

That's because most of the current line is made under the Pentax name with exception of the 11-16mm and current 80-400mm. That was the point I was making.

The last autofocus Tokina lenses with pentax mount were the AT-X 828 AF PRO 80-100mm f2.8, AT-X 287 AF PRO SV 28-70mm f2.8, AT-X 280 AF PRO 28-80mm f2.8, andAT-X 840 AF-II80-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 (as well as previous version), AT-X 242 AF 24-200mm, and Tokina's AF 193 19-35mm f3.5-4.5.

The FA35 and FA50 aren't getting anything but discontinued IMO, the FA35 already is, the FA50 won't be too far behind it.
.........
FA35 or if it was FA50 (or both) was produced in Japan
till for a few month ago, now Pentax produce them in Vietnam.
So why start produce in Vietnam for a few month ago
if they shall stop making it?

Pentax strategy can be to make only WR lenses
because of WR cameras(K2000 Super before Christmas with WR?).

So if they keep FA35 and FA50 for same years, itīs logic with WR.
Good lenses in rain are fast ones because of low light(FA are fast).
Perhaps also long zooms like DA17-70, DA50-200, DA55-300
and DA*60-250, because that you donīt have to change
lenses so much and can avoid water in the camera.
