That is in UK Pounds. £1200 is $2100 in Canada, which is way too rich for my blood. Nice looking camera though. My MZ-5n will live on
you didn't see the US$ price there eh?

I just got laid off and could not be more irritated by that than right now. I still have about 1100 in the bank and a few debts to collect on, but I can't afford to be broke right now.....or can i?

I read somewhere that the K7 will be/is $ 1499 Canadian @ Henry's.

The British price on many things seems high. When I was there in the '80's I recall cars (Mercedes, Honda) seemingly very over priced as their equivalent in Canada were much cheaper.

I haven't looked at price disparities between the two countries since then, until the guy from Scotland mentioned the msrp for the K7 in the UK.

My reaction is wow...why the extra money.

I was expecting the K-7 to weigh in at £900 here, but clearly not.

As a small island, we always get shafted with prices here!
*Throws up a little bit...*

£900 with kit would have been great, now I'm going to have to find more money, or wait before I buy it, both very difficult!

Oh my gosh I have to get myself one!
And a side note: After looking at the specs of this camera, I doubt the price will dramatically fall over the next few months (maybe $100 or less). There is almost nothing this camera lacks compared to the more expensive models and it certainly offers more than some!
Only problem is I have $-65.... HMMMM

Now a serious question- I hope that I will earn $200 off my part time summer job (a kid with a job in this economy? :-P) and get another $1000+ from my Grandma (she didn't give me Chinese New Year money this year so shes giving it to me now), but should I go ahead and buy the 50-135mm (or 70-200mm) with 540FGZ flash or should I stick with my 100mm flash and buy this camera?!#@ I wish i had all of them, but for now I can only have one or the other.

Eh, I dunno, if B&H wanted to offer a price a hundred bucks cheaper if you pulled the trigger before the initial announcement, that's fair.

(Of course you could also look at it that they jacked up the price after they saw the positive reactions, but I think I was betting on this model starting out at about 1350-1400 dollars, anyway. I'm just being a spectator for now, anyway: a new K20d *is* my upgrade for at least a couple of years, maybe longer. Nice to know there looks to be a good one out there in the pipeline though. Makes me much more comfortable about investing in glass and stuff, meanwhile.

So looks like AF assist is still using the built-in flash...according to the press release language.

Looks like all the specs have been leaked, unless Pentax has yet to announce some more features.
"A Dedicated AF-assist lamp further improves autofocus response and accuracy in low light conditions."

I do not think it will retail at 1200. The K20D was meant to retail at 950, but started at 800 I think. I got mine day of release for 750. I think a more realistic price would be 1000.
That's what I'm waiting for, even if I have to wait until next year. Patience, patience.

I exported computer monitors to one of my largest customers in the UK back when CRT screens were king. When I filled out the export documents for them I had to make sure to stipulate these units coulod not recieve PAL transmissions and had no built in tuner. Otherwise a massive VAT had to be applied and made the product ~50% more than can be purchased here.

I believe since the K-7 can do video, our friends across the pond have to pay a higher VAT than if it just shot still photography. Not sure if this is correct as I remember reading something about this in a trade magazine. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

K-7 vs. Nikon D90 (its true competition)

The usually reliable DPReview stumbled out of the box in its comparison of the K-7 to non-comparable cameras, particularly the Nikon D300.

The clear true competition is the very successful D90 launched last fall. How does the K-7 compare? Let's just say it should eat the D90's lunch if it can overcome brand snobbery:

K-7: 14.6 meg (D90: 12 meg)
K-7: in-body stabalization (D90: Not)
K-7: weather resistant/dustproof (D90: Not)
K-7: 5.2 fps (D90: 4.5 fps)
K-7: Viewfinder: 100% coverage (D90: 96%)
K-7: Video: 30 fps (D90: 24 fps -amateur hour!)
K-7: Raw conversion software incl. (D90: Must purchase)

Dimensionally they're almost identical (K-7 slightly smaller) and same weight. Both have 3" 920,000 pixel 170 degree view angle LCD's. Both have 11 point autofocus, but the K-7 has 9 cross-type points vs. D90's 1 cross-type points. Both have Live view. The D90 is currently selling for $1100 body only, K-7 will likely be $1000 +/- within 2-4 months of release.

Finally Pentax has made all the right moves to not only play with but trounce the big boys. Given Nikon's 2 year product cycle, the K-7 should enjoy carving out a nice niche for the next year plus. Simply a clearly superior product based on specs, now the proof will be in IQ. Given the tested quality of the earlier 14.6 meg sensor, it should fare well. Dynamic range will be interesting to check out on DxOMark Sensor where D90 has been comfortably leading the pack in its price range (still a great camera for the price).

Good job Pentax and congrats from an Olympus owner!

I shoot with an E510 (be nice, Pentaxians, I enjoy your Forum!), loving the compact size/light weight, ergonomics, Oly color rendition and quality of glass. But poor dynamic range and small size of viewfinder both get in the way of my enjoyment. I've been waiting for a legit review on DPReview of the Oly E620, but know dynamic range and viewfinder size, while improved, will still be a compromise.

So, yes, I too am watching the K-7. Twice the price but a lot more camera and weather resistant as well.

I'm afraid DPR is right. The K-7 is estimated at about $1600-1700 Cdn. That is the exact price of a D300. D300 is closer in specs to the K-7 as well. Given Pentax Canada's latest price increases (even with them 'adjusting' them somewhat) If I had the cash a D300 would be hard to pass up.

Then K-7 is also comparable to the following: Sony's KDL40D3000 40" BRAVIA Widescreen High-Definition LCD TV with ATSC HD Digital Tuner: KDL40D3000 at BEST PRICE
