As you say, it is a hyphen, not a dash, nor a minus.
A hyphen never is pronounced. If your typesetting program allows so, the hyphen is shorter than a dash, too.

So all this time when I've been saying:
"kay-little straight line-seven", I've sounded like an idiot?

I don't get it. It's K-7. That's how it's pronounced. Like a K-9 unit. Same thing.

So, you mean, it's "kuhseven"? Because I've been saying "kay seven". Do you put the emphasis on the first part, like, "KUHsev'n", or is it more "kuhSEV'n"?

The only thing I can figure is the Ausies have been pronouncing it "kay minus seven" . . .

Reminds me of one of my favorite Family Guy flash backs YouTube - Robert Loggia Family Guy

T as in, "Tim, look over there! It's Robert Loggia"

Space

L as in "Look, there goes Robert Loggia!"

Must be my bad.
I thought someone in the know had stressed that the hyphen was stressed. Or maybe they were talking about when typing it as opposed to the k2000 which also dropped the "d"

actually I think only the americans have the hyphen in that. The rest of the english speaking world either use K9 or Canine. Mater of fact the last time I saw that abreviation(k9 or k-9) was in a bad 80's movie. So I think it was just a bad americanism anyway. If you google it there are 5million K-9, 21million Canine(though I imagine that includes all the dental references) and 12million k9. In Australia we just call them dog units though i have seen canine patrol used.

Actually, you can thank military and police agencies for using K-9 on there vehicles for their K-9 corps. Its easier to teach dogs to spell K9 than canine.

It does look like an algebra formula. When and why did Pentax start using the - anyway? I'm betting the (-) got in there as a typo.
