I went to my local store to see the price they would ask for it, and when they were thinking they would get it. Turns out it is in the hot-off-the-press latest flyer, at 1499.99 CAD$. Needless to say I ordered one

I actually doubt the K-7 will drop in price signifcantly (maybe 1199 by December) just as the D300 actually went up in price since its release. With such a great camera Pentax has introduced, I doubt any company can come up with something totally new and radical (as the D300 did a year ago) Seriously, the K-7 matches and beats most of the D300 specs.

Apparently there are quite a few people placing pre-orders, as the K-7 is #13 "seller" on amazon in the the DSLR category. Pretty good for a Pentax camera that isn't even available yet, I'd say. I just hope I pre-ordered quick enough to get one in the first round of shipments.

Sorry to say this, but the D400 will be out soon and will probably be better than our K7...

For some definitions of "better", undoubtably. The D300 already is in some respects. But since the D400 will almost certainly be a lot heavier and lack in-body SR, it will be no more appealing to me than the D300 is right now.

Pentax has chosen not to compete head-on with the cameras of Nikon and Canon. Those who need the D300 (and eventual D400) will buy that camera. But I suspect the K-7 will appeal to a lot of people even if some of its specs are "inferior" on paper.

I don't know what to make of the D400 rumors but they do seem to be getting legs. D400 or not, Nikon will almost certainly take a swipe at the 5D Mark II with a new release soon. It's not a static market that's for sure.

I am waiting to see reviews and actual photos taken with real production models - not the early releases for the press. I love the durability factor but want to see how the new sensor is as far as noise with long night exposures once the final firmware is setup. (sadly sensor noise is the reason we have a non-pentax digital attached to the "big daddy" Celestron here)
