Nice shots. Great Resolution. FYI: You need to keep an eye on that mole below the eye on the cheek in the first pic. (esp. if the model has had a lot of sun exposure/burns) You can measure it and photograph it for record. Your Pentax can be diagnostic too!

Quite frankly, a K100, K200, K10, etc could all take that when equipped with the right glass. For that matter, any SLR could.

The K-7 IQ should look pretty identical to the K20.
+1

Me too.. With the right glass, this one can be achieved with any of the above mentioned cameras...

So I will have to rely on post processing to get images to look that sharp?

No, it's just that you can't believe what you see online. If you pixel peeped the RAW version of the image you posted in its original resolution, it would look much crappier.

No, to get them that sharp use good light, low iso, a sharp lens and shoot in raw, usm and the rest just helps.

Get the Pentax FA* 200mm f/4.0 Macro IF ED and the K-7 for the ultimate 1:1 macro shot.
Given the popularity and quality of that lens (and the A version too), why don't they relaunch it as a DA*?

When ever you do a macro shot like this, the detail really pops. Especially with a good macro lens. With close to 15 mega pixels, the K20D or the K7 would show similar detail. You would need a magnifying glass to see the differences between the NIKON and the PENTAX.

Ok this shot is pretty amazing. Very nice.
It's the light ...

If you're after images alike, invest a bit into studio lamps and maybe, a model and makeup, too. Having a Pentax with one of their amazing prime lenses then cannot hurt, of course. Should have left you with enough cash to buy thsoe lamps

To find out if a K-7 could take a picture as good as a $8000 camera.
You need a digital medium format to beat a K-7 IQ wise. Which is $20000 or more.

No, wait a bit ... It is possible to beat out the K-7 within the budget you're mentioning: Wait for Pentax 645D

exactly. dont underestimate studio lighting and pro retouching. the nikon d3x does have more resultion but the k7 is already very high resolution and you have to print gigantic prints to see any difference

Do we talk resolution here at all?

The initial image which was posted is a 1.2 MPixel photo!!!

Make me wonder why Nikon shows low resolution samples in their gallery

The image posted by Torphoto was a 100% crop and THAT is amazing resolution.

K10D + D-FA 100mm f/2.8 macro

I'm not saying it's a better shot than the D3X sample, but that D3X sample shot was taken in a controlled environment with a nice metallic mascara and lots of post processing. My sample was taken spontaneously at a grazing ground without flash or any other studio equipment. And it is not heavily processed.
