That's the same order of popularity I've seen DSLRs in(except for the fact that outside of camera stores I've never actually seen anyone with #s 4-8), both locally and while traveling.

Unfortunately I've only ever seen 1 other person in the "wild" with a Pentax DSLR. It was a guy at a basketball game taking a picture of something during halftime. I saw the camera in his hands and then did a double take when I thought I saw a ring of green on the lens. Sure enough, it was the trusty kit lens on a K-m or K-x.

What "Imminent Demise?"

This bricks and mortar camera store chain in St Louis might disagree about the imminent demise of Pentax.

Pentax is still well displayed in the stores here..although not as well as canikon. You see them fairly regularly on the street here as well. I came back from a camping trip with a few weekends ago and the majority of dslrs were Pentax. It's too bad pentax is less prominent in other areas.

While Canon seems to have the strongest presence here I actually see Oly about as often as Nikon, followed by Sony, and then Pentax... I have met a total of three wild Pentaxes roaming about, an old *ist DS, a K200D, and the K20D I convinced my friend to buy.

Not to worry - the Maya stuff is not about "the end", it's about one era ending and another one starting

That would be the era where some mystical energy flows out of the sun that makes the F-mount and K-mount identical, allowing all K-mount lenses to be used on Nikon bodies and F-mount lenses on Pentax bodies and etc., right? Looking forward to it, for sure.

Hehe

More realistically, it's the new golden era of Pentax, where the 645D mkII (introduced in 2011) sells so fast that Pentax can't build enough of them. And where Pentax introduces an APS-C-sized sensor compact which includes a larger version of the collapsible zoom lenses they've been designing for their supercompacts all these years - and it's so good that Ned sell his Leica on ebay :-)

The Mayan calender is ending in 2012 because there are no Mayans around to do a new one.

They just strike me as a the oddball.

Their DSLR's have a limited accessory range, their lenses are extremely expensive and they seem to be miles behind in terms of features. To me I'd liken their DSLR side to be without direction.

In fact you could buy new Zeiss lenses for Pentax in PKA mount for longer, than you can in EOS mount. Zeiss produces already a nice, though expensive, set of lenses for us. And seeing all the discussions here in the forum about the perceived too high prices of Pentax glass, Zeiss would be ill advised to invest even more in Pentax buyers.

Ben

EDIT: the original post referred to an articel from May 2009. We have seen the demise of Leaf, Sinar, Francke & Heidecke and Jenoptik (camera division) in the meantime. That should be enough for the blogger.
