Given the amount of new ideas, I also bet it will win the award to camera of the 2009 year.

With all due respect to my next camera (grr... release it already!), I think it will be very naive to believe that she will be better than the D400, that hasn't even been announced yet.

It doesn't have to be. D400 will cost at least 50% more than K-7, probably even more when D400 is actually on the shelf. K-7 has a lot for its price, and some features that D400 won't be able to match.

I'm skeptical about the d400 costing that much more. That said, something has to be said for the amount of features they've packed into the k-7. Nikon had a lot of us salivating when they put the d300 out. I doubt they've been sitting still.

Provided both cameras yield top quality results, I think it'll be a tough call. Either way, we win. Competition is a good thing, and to see the k-7 competing with the likes of the d300 (and likely d400) is awesome.

I can't think of anything that the D400 'won't' be able to match, except maybe body size... The D300 already has a comparable sensor, LCD, body, weathersealing, and probably better high iso, focussing and metering (my guess, given K-7 specs) and faster ffs. You can pretty much guarantee the next one will have kickarse video too...

That said, i don't really see the point comparing the two. D400 will be basically Pro level APS-c, K-7 is enthusiast. In Australia I wouldn't be surprised to see $1000 price difference for body alone when the D400 arrives.

My bet is for camera of the year is K-7; offers an awful lot for the money, fixes the main gripes with the K20, and puts it in the first portable 'enthusiast' body

Agreed given the what will probably be the price difference between the D400 and the K7. In this economy how many people are going to be able to afford the D400?

If the award is weighted for price over features (value weighted) the K-7 will win. If it favors features over price (performance weighted)... we'll see. I'm waiting to see a complete review before I can put real money on this wager.

What use is the body weathersealing when Nikon doesn't have any weathersealed lenses? It's like trying to sell one half of a raincoat...

Only buttons seald against moisture - Nikon D300 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

From photo.net k20d review:

"...only the K20D offers the highest level of dust and weather resistant seals found on an SLR"
"The K20D is most similar to the Olympus E-3—both have the highest weather sealing available, and when a weather sealed lens is attached they are more weather proof than a Nikon D3 or Canon 1D series. Pentax and Olympus DSLRs are the only splash proof cameras on the market."

Yes, the K-7 will be camera of year in both TIPA and EISA awards, simply because it offers something that the others does not - semi pro / pro features in a compact body.
