Chemicals are not worse than pixels!
The way, when and where you use chemicals is essential for the effect they have on the environment. At the RIT (or was it the MIT) some studying was done on the environmental impact of digital technology, and by extension the digital photography VS analogue. The out come was very surprising, particularly due to the extreme waste of electronic hardware components in the production, distribution, use, ageing and replacement.
Nowadays, the chemicals used for film manufacturing and processing are fare more environmentally friendly than a decade ago.
I think that, at the end and all calculating and testing done, digital might be a disaster, environmentally AND economically…
The trouble is that very, very, few people are ready to realise and to accept this!
The causality is not the thing but the man holding it…
This is not a statement about film might be dead or not, I do not want to discuss this now.
